Anyone make a Barbie cake?

Is it hard to do?

I made one for DD last year - it was easy. I cooked the cake in an Anchor Hocking batter bowl from Target. I do remember that the cake wasn't quite tall enough for the doll (I used a princess doll and I think those are a little taller than a barbie doll) so I had to create some height by taking a paper plate, cutting a hole in the center and putting it upside down on top of my display plate so that I had an extra inch of space to play with. I covered the plates in foil so that you couldn't see them. If I had more time I would have made some extra cake to use as a bottom layer. Make sure you wrap the bottom half of the doll in saran wrap so the doll stays clean. And I think I froze the cake a bit so that the icing went on easier.

The Pampered Chef classic batter bowl is supposed to be perfect for it. DH shattered mine and a new one is arriving soon. I would use these directions for it http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/recipesearch/recipedetail.jsp?recipeId=12272 and consult the reviews of allrecipes.com (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/barbie-doll-cake/Detail.aspx) as well if it were me.

Look at all these :) (except the one that appears to be Barbie's ta-tas.

Cool. Her theme was supposed to be Thumbelina and I have a doll for that, but couldn't figure out what to do. I'm not the best flower maker for cakes. Then, she saw one of the princess/barbie cakes and decided that could be her theme for her cake :).

I have a Pyrex bowl and various sizes of stainless steel bowls. Which would be better, do you think? I bet a friend has a Pampered Chef bowl - should I borrow that instead?

Now to plan how to decorate it. I wish I was better at it. I like doing it and am okay, but can't seem to get things smooth ever and lately my stars and flowers are really messy looking.

I've gotten a lot better with these PC decorating bottle (http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=13835&categoryCode=BK)s but I wonder if there is something similar at Michael's. I'd borrow the bowl since we've read that others may not be tall enough.

Those look neat. I have lots of decorating stuff. I think my problem is the consistency of the icing lately. The past few years, it's been super hot, which does not help anything.

:hysterical: at the Barbie boobies. Had I seen that idea before, I would have made them for the last day of my Lactation Consultant classes!

I borrowed the Pampered Chef bowl. Good thing I decided to bake the cake tonight and decorate tomorrow because it bakes for 70 minutes! And, I need 2 to make it tall enough. Wow!

No kidding! The second cake is only needed for 2-3" or so to make it work.

Done it a few times. I did Snow White one year.

I used the Pampered Chef batter bowl. Since I also used a princess doll that is too tall, I used a 2nd cake mix and used half to do a round cake and the other half to do cupcakes. I sat the PC cake on top of the round cake to add extra height. Wrapped the doll's lower half in saran wrap to make cleanup easier.
I made Wilton buttercream and just piped stars everywhere to make the dress. I didn't put saran wrap on Barbie's top half, but did pipe stars to make part of the dress up there to make her decent.
It was not hard, but it was time consuming.

Okay, I am putting this together. Do I have to hollow out a path to put the doll in? I decorated the skirt part already because I knew it'd be harder with the doll to go around. The cake was frozen and it's been out about an hour. Do I do it now or in the morning?

Yes, because the cake might split if you just try to shove her in. Unfortunately, I know this from experience!

I have used this pan twice with good results, once with a Strawberry Shortcake doll and once with an Ariel doll:
http://www.amazon.com/Wilton-2105-565-Wonder-Mold-Kit/dp/B0000VMHIW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307242762&sr=8-1

It is not a tall pan so I had to tape Ariel's legs in a bent position so that she would fit.

Hope your cake turns out great!

ever tried marshmallow fondant? super easy to work with (sooooo much easier than real fondant!!). you could cut out your flowers and stars with mini cookie cutters to decorate her skirt. i've done sam's cakes the last two years out of the stuff. easy to roll and cover the whole cake. easy to make decorations from. but when you knead the stuff by hand, either grease up your hands first or wear some nitrile gloves or else you'll be wearing the food coloring to the birthday party all over your hands ;).
