DD will be turning two soon and :heartbeat: bunnies, so I was thinking of making some kind of bunny-shaped birthday cake. Has anyone ever made one, whether from a mold, or by cutting out the shape from a bigger cake? How did you decorate it? Also, I'm not super keen on using artificial food coloring – anyone ever use natural ingredients to color frosting? Thanks in advance for any inspiration, suggestions or tips:)

Here are some instructions:

Whole Foods has some more natural food colorings.

Family Fun, Parenting (Parents?), Woman's Day, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens...they all have good b-day cakes if you need more ideas. :)

What a cute theme!

Wilton also has a couple other cake pans I saw around Easter time:

This would also be cute, perhaps for favors:

The shaped pans usually come with ideas on how to decorate the cake, or you could browse around on Wilton's site.

Good luck! :)

I realize you are looking more for a 3D idea, but this would be super easy and would not require any special pans or tools....

Can't find the article now but we did a butterfly using a round cake and cutting it in half and placing the curved sides back to back and then decorating it with candies to make a design of a body, wings, etc.

When we were doing that, my mom commented how easy it would be to do a bunny face the same way. One round circle cake for the face, then take a 2nd round cake and cut it in half and then trim each half in to a long, thin ear shapes.

We used an oversized cutting board wrapped in foil as the base or cake plate. Place the round circle low enough to leave room to place each of the ears above it. Frost in all white or all brown. Then using icing or candies to outline the inner ear. Use pink sprinkles inside the inner ear lines. Use frosting or candies for eyes, nose, whiskers and upturned mouth.

DD and her male BFF are having a shared pirate party and now I am wondering if I can make some sort of pirate hat or a ship the same way!

ETA: would also be easy to do a cat that way, too!

Growing up I would make a bunny cake every easter, it was really easy and really cute! It was along the lines of what the PP described. You bake two rounds, one round is the face, and then the other round is cut into three pieces--2 ears and 1 bowtie. I would then frost it, sprinkle with coconut for the fur, and then last add the bunny's features/decorations. I searched online for an example--I think this will help:

This is what I was going to suggest (not this particular link, but this way of making the bunny shape). We have a picture from one of my early birthdays (2? 3?) where my mom made a bunny just like this. :)

My mom used to make the second cake shown here (clubhouse.com/2007/04/07/bakers-coconut-easter-bunny-cut-up-cake/) for Easter. It was really cute.

My mom made me a similar cake for my second birthday! I have vague memories of it!

My mom still makes me this bday cake every year. :D In fact, the rest of it is in the fridge as I type! We usually just frost it with white frosting, except we make the inside of the ears pink. You could do this with strawberry juice if allergies are not an issue.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm thinking I'll probably make the cut-out cake from two round cakes like several posters suggested. I also found this cake idea (http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/easter-bunny-cakes.html#c16) (with the bunnies on top of the cake) and think it's adorable, so I might try something similar, since you don't need any special molds for it, just cupcake pans.
