Gift for 3 yo boy

A close friend's son is turning 3 soon, and I am overwhelmed by how much this opens up the toy options! I'd like to get him one toy that is $50-$75 (don't want to do a lot of little things). AFAIK, he likes pretty much everything--vehicles, play food, music, books. I was thinking an oudoor item, but it is still pretty cold here, so I don't know about that...

Does the friend have any ideas of what she wants for her kid? She could also gives ideas of the type of thing he likes to play with.

I am a BIG fan of the Imaginext line. DS (3.5) has the firehouse linked above and loves it. He also has the aircraft carrier and ship (and some others sitting in the gift closet for birthdays/holidays). He recently gave the dragon fortress to a classmate for his birthday and his Mom told me that it has been his favorite toy for a month, since he got it at his party.

Magnatiles are a big hit with DS too, as are Legos (Duplos - they have some really fun sets).

I think this is a fun age to shop for - have fun!

This is currently on sale for ~$20 at Maukilo (see the bargains forum for more details) -- I ordered it for a friend's son last night. Another thing I got from that sale, which I think DS will enjoy, is the Bilibo.

Not sure what kids are fed up with video games especially 3 year olds but anyway. Our son is turning 3 on the 26th and he will be getting the v-tech mobigo learning system, 2 diecast chuggington trains, a diecast car set from the Mater's tall tale cartoons, a book from the cars 2 movie, a finn mcmissle car from the movie, a cars 2 memory game and the super why ABC learning game. Maybe one of the automoblox cars that I bought from the maukilo sale if not he'll get 6 of those from christmas. He has had some since he was 2 and loves them.
I know my mother is giving him the candy land game and some money so we will use that to buy other games or mobigo games...maybe some imaginext (they have stuff from the new cars movie or there is a boat and a space shuttle that Noah is always looking at in the store).
He also like doing puzzles so we have started getting him more of those and trying to get him some games for things we can do togeather quietly.
