Why doesn't Amazon have a category in Toys & Games called travel. :tongue5:

Has anyone found any new activities for travel that don't involve more screen time?

We have not used a DVD in the car or airplane yet. (We do have a Leapster that we will use for the next big trip and sometimes for little trips around town.)

Toys we've used:
Doodle Pro
Magnetic landscapes (using a cookie sheet)
busy books
Audio CDs that we sing to together
Books
lacing cards
matchbox cars
stringing beads on shoelaces
stickers with a book that the stickers can be put in and out of.

Here's a blog post with a lot of ideas: http://nettacow.blogspot.com/2009/07/keeping-toddlers-occupied-in-car.html

We start off with:

books
markers & paper
what ever toys the boys pack
listening to audio books in the car
snacks, lots of snacks
looking out the window when driving

we'll probably try a travel bingo game soon

then after a long while, the electronic stuff come out. But they switch back and forth.

Magnets & cookie sheets - brilliant!

I just put a travel bingo game in my Amazon basket.

Our kids are sticker book fiends, so I usually buy them a few new ones.

We also do books, flashcards, drawing.

I wonder if they have any of those tile games where you move the pieces around to create a specific picture. We also had these fun games my mom bought where you shook the plastic thingy and different pictures sorted into a the slots and you made a funny sentence or something.

Here's another cool website: http://www.momsminivan.com/

And A Toy Garden has this Deluxe on the Go Bag that has intrigued me.: http://www.atoygarden.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1962

Doodle Cards!

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=doodle+cards+fiona+watt&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Adoodle+cards+fiona+watt&ajr=0

We use dry erase crayons on them as well as the markers.

We've also had luck with
http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Deluxe-Latches-Board/dp/B000NVBE1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307738732&sr=8-1
a mini "pinball" game from the Dollar Tree similar to this:
http://www.amazon.com/Schylling-Curious-George-Pinball/dp/B000JCYKSW/ref=sr_1_9?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1307740063&sr=1-9
and magnetic pattern blocks as well.

I'm thinking of getting a magnet maze ( http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games&field-keywords=magnet+maze ) for an upcoming trip and maybe one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Liquid-Motion-Gravity-Tumbler/dp/B002P34AGU/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IGH9POP83U1RL&colid=2S7ZURV0TL9ST
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=+pop+up+letters#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_23?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=magnetic+maze&sprefix=magnetic+pattern+blocks&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amagnetic+maze

Does a tag reader/ leap pad count as screen time?

eta: my kiddos are pretty happy just bringing matchbox cars or small animals/dinosaurs in the car as well.
