What's normal. I heard $10 is what you're supposed to spend? This will be our first real BD party and I want to do the right thing and not spend too much. (I'd normally spend a bit more than that). I was thinking of getting a Putamayo CD for her little girl. (Animal Playground), but I think it's abot $15 or so...

I think between $10 and $15 is normal for birthdays. I like to give the Melissa and Doug Jumbo Knob Puzzles (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/First-Shapes-Jumbo-Knob-Puzzle/dp/B000NNXKT2) for the first birthday parties that we have gone to. I will usually do one of those and a Sandra Boynton board book (this is my favorite http://www.amazon.com/Moo-Baa-Sandra-Boynton/dp/067144901X/ref=sr_1_7?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1308334186&sr=1-7if it is a closer friend.

Depends on the closeness of the relationship for me.

I've known one of my BFFs for 27 years now, so when her DD turned 1 last year, I sent her a Waldorf-style doll from Magic Cabin, which was about $60.

For anyone else's kid, I wouldn't spend as much.

We have a general $25 limit for birthdays, but I think $10-$15 is fine to spend on a 1st birthday present for a playmate/neighbor.

Can you even get decent quality stuff for $10 anymore? If so...lead me to it!! Even Melissa and Doug stuff (at least around here) runs $15-20, even for the basic puzzles.

I love this as a gift, and have given it to several friends with babies. My 15 month old LOVES this thing: http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-3106-Mozart-Magic-Cube/dp/B00004TFLB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308335127&sr=8-1 but it's a little higher than your $10-15 budget.

Love board books as gifts as well. It's easier to stay within that price ranges with books as well.

I think $10 is on the low end. I would do something for about $15-$20, unless you got some awesome clearance price or something where you spent $10 and it's worth like $20+. The CD sounds like a great gift!

I love the "That's not my...(dragon/teddy/monster)" books for 1 yos. I also love to give CD's for kids that age. They Might Be Giants are really big here now. I agree that $15-$20 is a good amount but only what you can afford comfortably.

ETA: You can usually find some nice M&D stuff at Home Goods for less than $10.

I think that would be a lovely gift and I think it is fine to spend $15.

Amazon sells the CD for $12.83. I think that and a board book would be a great gift. Someone mentioned the "That's not my..." series and those are my favorite to give as gifts.

i tend to spend a little more on "milestone" occasions-- and count "1st" birthdays as such an occasion.... so yeah-- i might go ahead and get the animal playground cd (we have that one and love it :):) my 3.5 year old has just recently gotten back into her "animal crackers at the human zoo cd!") and maybe add a "cheaper" board book. we huge bookies here too :)
