View Full Version : Home pregnancy tests on the cheap?
Peep!

Hi! I'm a frequent reader here but this is my first post. I feel a little strange posting, because we're TTC, no kids yet...but I thought this forum would have good advice. Has anyone buy home tests in bulk, like a pack of 10 or anything like that? Do you recommend a particular brand or place to buy? They all work more or less the same (right?), so I was looking for cost-effectiveness.
I don't plan on testing everyday or anything like that...;) but I thought it might be nice to have a few on hand and save some money.
TIA!

A lot of people on here buy ones from dollar type stores.

The Dollar Tree has good tests for pregnancy as well as ovulation predictor kits. Much cheaper than, say, Wal-Mart and works just as well as name brand tests. I bought a bunch in advance of TTC #3 b/c we had quite a wait with DD and DS, but this time we got lucky on the first round. DH thought all the OPKs were funny and told me, "You're like a scientist!", lol. I actually have about $5 worth of tests left over.

I used the dollar store ones this time around. It was fun having a small stash of them and taking them over the course of a few days to see the line get darker and darker. Cost of a small stash from the dollar store is whole lot cheaper than get just one somewhere else. Though since I got a positive on the first try I made DH do one just to make sure they weren't defective or something lol.

I had issues with the cheapy brands. When I was pg with DD, I never got a positive read from a dollar store test. Finally, I used a Clear Blue Easy test and the positive result was very apparent.

I used the dollar tree tests with both pregnancies and they worked great.

Thanks so much for the replies! I never would have thought of the dollar store for tests, but that's a great idea. I'm going to make a stop today.

I bought through earlypregnancytests.com through 4 years of infertility and have always been happy with them. If you sign up for their emails you'll get offers for special deals.

I've used the dollar store brands and they were not as fast to register the HCG (?) hormone as the name brand. But, I bought my ovulation predictor kits from this website and they are super cheap and worked like a charm. They also have cheap pregnancy tests, but I never used them.

Different brands of home pregnancy tests test for different levels of HCG, some higher, some lower. There's a website that tells what level each brand tests for - I will see if I can find it. Some of the cheaper brands were on there.
Here it is: http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hpt.html

If this is your first, I would invest in one digital Clear Blue Easy (with the words "pregnant" or "not pregnant"), especially it you think you will be the type who can't wait and will test as early as possible. Then only use it after you get a positive with one of the cheapos. When I got pregnant with DS, I tested 3 days before my period was due (I just had a feeling), so the pink line on the cheapo wasn't very dark, and so I kept thinking I was just wanting it to be there. DH was out of town, so I didn't have anyone else to get a second opinion from. I pulled out the digital one, which I had gotten for free with an ovulation kit, and took it the next time I had to "go" and the "pregnant" popped up right away! Eased my mind that it was real and not just wishful thinking.

With DS I bought a few tests from the Dollar Store and ovulation strips from www.babywishes.org. I tested with the Dollar Store test and got a positive 12 days after ovulation. It did take a few minutes to come up, but it was obviously positive when it did. Then I used a digital just to be sure. I was very happy with them. I think I also got some sample pregnancy tests from that website and those worked great too.
Good luck!
I used the dollar store ones. They worked better than CBE for me. I did get an ovulation kit and I charted as well.

Not sure if anyone else has recommended these yet, but Amazon has really cheap pregnancy test strips that work really well (Wolfo brand??). I know for a fact that they detected my HCG as low as 25.
