I liked to get the kids a couple of new toys for our yearly 9-hour drive. I have this I Spy bag and love it, but am looking for something new. No coloring/art things -- that would be a disaster with my older son!

No ideas, sorry. But what age would you say the I Spy bags are good for? I'm looking for some travel toys for my 15 month old.

Well, drat. I was hoping you had a bunch of great responses already. I'm looking, too. I am going to get three of the crayon roll-up fabric holders for our trip, but since you said no art supplies, that is probably out. I'll keep my eye on this thread!

Okay, I didn't find many travel toys, beyond a cool iSpy toy (http://www.etsy.com/listing/71071093/metro-market-pears-mini-i-spy-bag-one-of) that you had already mentioned, but I did find...

Small (http://www.etsy.com/listing/73766368/small-ouch-pouch-tm-first-aid-organizer?ref=sr_gallery_12&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=travel+kids&ga_page=3&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade) and medium (http://www.etsy.com/listing/73680789/medium-ouch-pouch-tm-first-aid-organizer) Ouch Pouches, perfect for organizing things for travel in a diaper bag or backpack. (And let's face it, I am a huge sucker for little bags and organizing tools. :love5:)
Sketcher wallets (http://www.etsy.com/listing/71012951/happy-campers-sketcher-wallet-colored) that contain colored pencils and a notepad for travel, perfect for kids who have outgrown crayons.

Other than that, I've got nothin.

Here's a travel felt board:

With a couple felt play sets:

There are a whole bunch of felt play sets based on books, but I think open ended sets will get more play.

this one looks fun if you boy is into Star Wars:

I wonder if he'd do better with pencils rather than crayons. He might not try to feed them to Caleb, for one thing!

Yeah. At 2, he started being interested in "feeling" it (Like a beanbag -- in fact, I wished I DID have beanbags for throwing around outside the car). At 3, now, he is interested in trying to find items inside

I have heard that the younger kids (18-months-ish) like I-spy bottles -- where you have a much larger "peek" area and can see the filling/colorful items rolling around and around as you move the bottle -- even if they are still not as interested in finding specific items.

At 13 months, I also bought a "quiet book" for my son and he didn't get into THAT until 3 years old either :( So I have not had great success with etsy travel toys.

Yeah, my older son isn't/wasn't into ANYTHING. He's 5 now, and likes the I Spy bag now that his little brother likes it! C is 22 months and loves all kinds of toys. He seems to really like the I Spy bag, so I just ordered him a mini size. He also loves cars, so I think I'll look for a felt/travel car mat or something like that. I'll look into those quiet books -- they look neat!

I came across a travel Bingo game on Etsy, which was also mentioned on that site that was linked above. That sounds like fun! I know my 5-year-old likes Bingo, and it's something I'd be able to do with him even though I'm in the front seat.

I don't have Etsy recommendations, but we do an 8 hour drive 2-3 times per year and hands down the most useful distraction we've found are "forbidden" snacks. Basically we go to the snack aisle at TJ's and let the kids pick out several things. We also get juice boxes and cereal bars and similar items - in other words, foods that are not terribly unhealthful but that we don't get on a regular basis. This generates far more enthusiasm and goodwill than any toys or activities we've tried. We also bring recorded books and Prairie Home Companion cds, as well as a harmonica. Finally, we do lots of rest stops where we do our best to wear the kids out. My dc are roughly the same age as yours, and they generally do great on road trips with this strategy. YMMV, of course!

Not an etsy find, but the travel-sized magnadoodle is awesome.

The i spy bags are really cute. This game seems like it would also be fun:
