Why don't you just let your 5 yr old pick where he/she wants to go for his/her bday? That is typically what most of my friends do with their kids.

Ditto on the hibachi style restaurant, like Benihana's. Always a hit with the kids.

We let ds1 pick. At 5yo he chose Boston Market. :) Every year since has been sushi.

BENIHANA!!! Both of my boys choose this for their birthdays every year. We are headed there on Friday for DS's 10th b-day.

Teppan style Japanese food is always fun!

We let DD1 chose, she has chosen a local 50s diner, or a local taqueria.

Do you have a Rainforest Cafe? My kids love that place. And recently we went to a restaurant at an aquarium - it had the coolest huge tank right next to our table. The kids loved it!

Mine usually like sushi and/or hibachi and Red Robin. (I'm LOL at how many of us had the same answers!)

Mine always picks Red Robin for her birthday and other special occasions. Except one really random time when she insisted she wanted Indian food. We went. She ate rice. :)

So, I've never been to a Red Robin- what is so great and kid friendly about them? We're going on a loooong road trip this Oct and I'm wondering if I should scope out a nearby Red Robin!

Think "medium upscale" burger joint (my favorite is the banzai burger - burger with teriyaki sauce & pineapple). They do have other fare there too - chicken, tacos, etc. Fun atmosphere and the kids can get a balloon at the end.

My kids always ask to go to:

CPK
Cheesecake Factory (for brunch and dinner)
IHOP (for breakfast/brunch)
Islands
Benihana

And they sing happy birthday to you!

I love the California burger. Their salads are good too (though definitely not low cal). They have quite a few selections on their kids menu too.

I would otherwise hate that place and the food is nothing to write home about but the kids LOVE it. They go whenever my MIL is in town. It is impossible to feel blah when the kids are so excited about it.

T, true to his mother's roots, will usually ask for fried chicken and peach cobbler from this local place when he has a choice.
