One set of my dishes has tons of chips and large chunks missing (we use two sets--dairy and meat). MIL gave me a complete set of dishes to replace them with (and I really like the ones she gave to me--she has about 10 sets). So, should I just keep the chipped set for a just in case situation or realize that I will never take them out again and just go donate them somewhere?

Yeah, get rid of them. It's not worth the storage space for dishes that are in cruddy shape & chances are you'll forget about them or not want to bother getting them out later anyway. I had some extra storage space & kept mine for 4 years - never used them once. I finally got rid of them just before moving.

I would also get rid of the old set... more room in your cabinets too. :)

Donate to a mosaic studio or toss.

Donate to a mosaic studio or toss.

Try freecycle too, I see requests for chipped china frequently.

I donated our old set to a local woman's shelter. They have a big 'store' set up where they can shop when they are ready to get a place. Everything is free for them. I felt good giving it away.
ETA---I would remove the plates that are in poor condition.
