Kindle Questions

My sisters and I are going in on a Kindle for our father's birthday next month. We will be getting the 3G since he travels a lot and we think it will be helpful for him to be able to download books wherever he may be.

1) How obtrusive are the ads on the Kindle? We were initially planning no ads but I am curious as to how much of a difference they make.

2) Any recommendation on cases? We think he would like something in brown leather.

3) Anything else we should know before we purchase?

I don't have the Kindle with Ads, so I can't attest to how intrusive they are, but I love LOVE my Kindle. from what I have read, the ads version is very discreet and is only on the HOME page when you log off/turn off and is not visible when reading.

I don't have the one with the ads either but I wish it was out when I bought mine. The ads supposedly only show up on the home screen which you're never really on. They're not in the actual books, so won't affect reading.

This case is expensive but SO worth it:

I can't compliment it enough... it's leather, not too bulky and the light that pops up out of it is PERFECT and powered by the kindle so no plugging it in or batteries etc. It's SO worth the money.

I have the wi-fi ad-free version. I've never missed the 3g on it since I always have a number of books loaded up on it.

Mine is red and I am typically very cheap when it comes to buying accessories but to me the kindle would just not be the same without it.

I totally agree about not really needing the 3G version. I also have the one with just wi-fi and I keep a dozen or so books on it at once even though I only ever read one at a time. I figure that way if I ever want to start a new book they are already downloaded and I don't need to have internet access.

I also keep my wifi turned off mostly unless I just bought a new book or something because the battery lasts so much longer that way.

I have the same cover linked above with the light and love it! I have the 3g kindle and it's great! I would miss not having the 3g.
