Looking for recs on a portable DVD player with screen for a 12 hour car trip with my 2 year old. Would like the option of securing it to the back of the seat(s) if possible.

What can you recommend or NOT recommend?

Thanks.

Sony portable works well for us (we have 2 -- one is the latest model and the other is from 3 years ago -- still going strong). No experience attaching it to the back seat.

I've had these for 2 years and had no problems with them (they have terrible reviews) they attach on the headrest super easy. http://www.target.com/RCA-Dual-Screen-Portable-Player/dp/B002RCDKVK/ref=br_1_7?ie=UTF8&id=RCA%20Dual%20Screen%20Portable%20Player&node=10222201&searchSize=30&searchView=grid3&searchPage=1&sr=1-7&qid=1310264086&rh=&searchBinNameList=target_com_category-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin%2Cprice%2Cdisplay_size_derived&searchRank=salesrank&frombrowse=1
Before that I had one that was this style http://www.target.com/Digital-Portable-Player-DL730-PD-Carrying/dp/B000ZPOY5W/ref=br_1_2?ie=UTF8&id=Digital%20Portable%20Player%20DL730-PD%20Carrying&node=10222201&searchSize=30&searchView=grid3&searchPage=1&sr=1-2&qid=1310264086&rh=&searchBinNameList=target_com_category-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin%2Cprice%2Cdisplay_size_derived&searchRank=salesrank&frombrowse=1 and a holder to attach it between the two front seats like this http://www.amazon.com/TrendyDigital-Portable-portable-Notebook-Included/dp/B0039KXWVC/ref=sr_1_3?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1310264350&sr=1-3 It worked fine but setting it up was kinda a PITA to set up

sorry i wanted to reply earlier but i didn't bc i didn't know the brand. we use a portable DVD player for DS when we go on long road trips and it comes with a thing to mounts to the seat. it's really old (we had it before my son was born, at least, probably for at least 3 years) so i doubt they even make that same model anymore.

all i can say is make sure whatever you get has a car adapter...battery on ours will not last more than 2-3 hours . we recently went on a 7hr road trip with DS. he did nap a lot of the time but he needed to watch his video on the DVD. luckily we were able to use AC outlet in our Ody to power after the battery went low.

eta: i just found it, it's a Panasonic DVD-LS850. doesn't look like its made anymore
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DVD-LS850-Portable-Diagonal-Widescreen/dp/B000QV9T6Y

here is a newer version that got good reviews. don't know if it has a carrying case and mounting thing and whatnot
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DVD-LS86-8-5-Inch-Portable-Player/dp/B0014FO5CE/ref=pd_cp_e_0

eta2: i asked dh, and he thinks we bought ours at Costco. i do know that costco electornics/cameras tend to come with extras (carrying cases, etc) so that may be a bonus of getting one there. ours came with a nice case and a thingy to mount it to the seat.

We are in the process of buying a car but the rear entertainment package for the minivan we wanted is out of stock (Honda) plus it cost a lot of money as well. so Dh is trying to find an alternative . He found this last night and shown it me. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_43571RUSDT/ESS-Headrest-Video-Package-Tan.html?tp=47197 . You can browse similar items like this on their website and i think there a lot to choose from.

No experience with the kind you strap to the seat, but we love our Sony portable players. The girls use and abuse (well the 5yo does the abuse) them and they are still going strong, after 3 years! We did have a lower cost one at one point, maybe Sanyo, that broke in about 6 months. I think we paid around 80-90 for the Sony model.

we had one with a car mount-the car mount broke after a year or so when DS hit it. Now we use it with a case logic case that straps to the seat. It takes some work to get it on tight but is working pretty well. Our DVD player is a philips PET1030/37 portable DVD player. We've had it several years (since DS was 2 maybe-and he's 5 now)

We bought a Coby MP4 player for our upcoming roadtrip. The plan is to have 2 year old DD hold it because we couldn't figure out a good mounting system for any player when DD is rearfacing. She is good about using handheld electronics. We picked this particular one for several reasons. 1) not a touch screen so she won't accidentally stop the movie if she points at Buzz. 2) buttons nested on side and somewhat small. 3) mp4 so we can just load all the movies and not have to fuss with DVDs in the car. 4) can run on it's rechargeable battery 5) uses a USB charger so we can use our car charger to refresh
