Anyone have experience with melatonin causing hallucinations in there dd?
DD is 3 1/2. Has had sleep issues her whole life. She's had a sleep study and was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome. It was attributed low iron stores. After several months on iron supplements her iron levels are up and the sleep is much improved. She used to wake 4-5 times a night, now we are at 1-2 times.
I still am desperate for her to sleep all night so I can do. We are not seeing the sleep specialist currently but at one visit she mentioned trying melatonin. So last week I a bought some. We've been traveling a lot lately and she and my oldest dd were thrown off and having a hard time going to sleep.
The first night I gave them both .5mg. Somehow my youngest bit the end of the glass dropper and was crunching on glass! Anyhow, got the glass out of her mouth without any issues. We tried .5mg for a few nights w/out a lot of change. So I went up to 1mg.
We've been doing 1mg before bed. It's been a huge help for my oldest and a slight help for dd#2 until tonight.
She was falling asleep on the couch tonight after a busy day. I went ahead and gave her the 1mg and put her to bed. She slept from about 7 to midnight and woke screaming. This is normal for her. I went in and comforted her. She was still awake an hour later and just couldn't go back to sleep. I've read you can give melatonin in the middle of the night too so I gave her 1mg. An hour later she was still wide awake and acting nervous and itchy. She has a few mosquito bites, so I gave her a 1/2 dose of benedryl. Which she has always tolerated fine. To be honest I didn't really even think about having given her the melatonin an hour earlier.
Throughout the night when I went into her room she was telling me she's having bad dreams, which she says every time she wakes regardless if she's had benedryl, melatonin, or nothing at all. So nothing seemed abnormal at first. I was just getting frustrated thinking she fell asleep to early on the couch and that's why she was up.
I finally brought her into bed with me. Well, she kept talking about bad things in her room and in my room on the ceiling. She told me they were numbers. I turned on the lights she still saw them. Then it got really bad, she was screaming in fear wanting to get out of the room because of the bad things. She sleeps with 3 lovies. She looked at them, screamed bloody murder and threw them saying the bad things were there too. She was just out of control about these bad numbers. She said they were getting into her body. Even with dh and I both there trying to hold and comfort her it didn't help.
She and I are now watching tv and she is much better. She says they are still there a little but not too bad. She wants me to vacuum them up. They are still getting in her a little and making her tickle. She isn't freaking out anymore, just saying the stuff came down from the ceiling and is on her lovies.
I feel so bad for her and guilty that I gave it to her. I'm wondering if it's the combination of benedryl and melatonin or what. I will not be giving either again, but I also wonder if there is any underlying issues that are causing her sleep issues that the melatonin exaggerated? Of course she did have a sleep study and other issues weren't brought up. The pediatric sleep clinic we are using has a psychiatrist the dr.suggested we see to figure out what is still going on. I think we may go ahead and schedule an appointment.
Anyone ever heard of any experiences like this? It was so scary for all of us.
