View Full Version : Need gate help - separating cat from dog

Due to the future arrival of DC #2, we have to relocate our cat. We previously housed her food, water and litter in a multi-tiered cat cage that also provided a safe haven from our dog in an extra bedroom that we had upstairs. The extra bedroom is now being turned into a nursery, so Kitty is being relocated to the guest room, which does not allow room for her large cat cage. We plan to put the food and litter out in the open, but want to protect her by putting up a gate in the doorway that she can get through, but the dog cannot.

We would like to buy a pressure mounted gate with slats spaced far enough apart (3"+) so our little cat (only 7 pounds) can squeeze through, leaving our dog on the other side. If possible, we'd like a gate that does not have a bar across the bottom, in case we decide to mount a little higher to allow her to access the room under the gate. Does anything like this exist? TIA!

No real suggestions for you, just something to think about. When DD was smaller, I put a baby gate near the top of our stairs. The gate was maybe 30" high, at the most - plenty low for a cat to leap right over, but neither cat would even attempt it. The slats were probably narrow enough for the one cat to slip though, and she wouldn't even attempt it. The one cat would sit and meow piteously until someone opened the gate for her. The other cat would meow a time or two, and then jump on the gate, and then over. He is a big, heavy cat, so it made a real racket when he did this. Neither cat tried to go through the slats. Ever. I love my cats, but they are not the most intelligent of beasts. ;)

If your cat will go through the slats, more power to you. Just saying I wouldn't invest a bunch in a gate that Kitty might see as being the same as a brick wall. ;)

Good luck!

We use a gate for a similar reason and we just mounted the gate 7 inches or so off the floor and kitty goes under the gate and dog can not.

Just an FYI, you know those hardware-mounted Kidco gates? The kind that even adults can't open? Our lab can open those. He will also just blast right through the pressure mounted ones.

YMMV

most of my dogs have always pushed open the pressue mounted gates or just jumped them.

One of our cats is that small and she can fit through the end bars of this gate:

Because you mount it in the doorway the gap between the wall and the first slot is wider than the others. Our other cat is too big to fit through the slots but she realized after a year she can jump over it. The dog isn't bright enough to do either.

We bought these to block off the rooms with cat litter/food but still allow access to the cats. They work great for the cats, but my DD is almost 2 (small for her age, though) and can still squeeze herself through the cat opening if she wants to get into a blocked off room. Don't buy them to keep your kids out :)

We bought a gate that had a small pet door in it. I'm not sure how big your dog is, but it might work for you. Ours is something like this:

Gate w/ Pet Door (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Carlson-Mini-Gate-with-Pet-Door-Dogs/10741053?sourceid=1500000000000003260550&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=10741053)

A friend of mine has this gate and it works well for her

I have used just a regular baby gate and my cats were able to jump over it once I showed them how.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I had no idea this type of gate existed. We'll be looking into this for sure.
