View Full Version : Anyone thinking about fall clothes?

We don't have summer in San Francisco. Or well, it happens in the fall, sort of, but it still isn't hot. So I'm not buying any summer clothes for myself. I've got plenty for the very occasional use they get.

Anyone thinking about fall trends yet! What shape jeans are going to be in style? Any color trends? Or other trends you are interested in?

I saw red is supposed to be big. And that dusters are predicted as a trend.

Well, trying not to buy much but I have been looking at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale catalog online, have you seen that?

http://global.syndeca.com/nordstrom/anniversary/2011/sale/?catalogid=anniv2011

I like the red poncho-like sweater on page 42, and some of the boots. Would also consider the silk dress on page 7 if I had a fall event I would wear it to (otherwise I'm not sure I would wear it much in my everyday life.) They are showing lots of skinny pants, and lots of dolman sleeves (not a fan of the latter, too hard to wear a coat or sweater!)

Had not seen the Nordies link. Thank you! Skinny pants are not good on me. I may have to make due with what I have got for another year. Or maybe I will get lucky and there will be some other counter trend for those of us with fat thighs.

Not thinking about clothes yet but I did get some new Ugg boots this summer. I cannot wait to wear them! I will need a new streamlined urban black parka as the zipper in mine keeps getting stuck and has torn up the sides.

im thinking. i need/want/would love a pair of nice black boots with a high heel. My ideal choice would be suede, almond shape toe, miu miu or prada:loveeyes:

i also want a pair of ankle booties in a nude color with a medium heel.

and then, so i dont mess up either of the above:ROTFLMAO: id like a casual but still cute pair of ankle boots that i can wear when im out with baby and dont want to be a bum in my uggs.

i also would like a couple of pairs of jeans, but not sure quite what i want. I think i like a pair from current elliot in a bell bottom shape but i have not worn bell bottom jeans in forever, many years. Im getting so tired of always wearing skinny jeans though i still love them. Excited to see what fall denim trends are. I dont like colored denim so wont do that regardless.

I have barely been able to wear my summer clothes--it only started getting hot here in July! I saw some fall stuff starting to trickle out, and I can't open my mind to it yet!

:yeahthat: Except we're still waiting for the heat. We've only had a handful of days over 75!! Nope, no fall clothes allowed here until we get at least one wearing of each summer outfit.

I'm thinking about shoes, jeans, and a jacket. Our weather is pretty mild so I end up wearing flip-flops in November and I would love to break that habit. I want a pair of flats and a pair of nice boots. I want a good pair of boots every year but always balk at the prices... a couple of years ago I bought a pair of Aerosoles at Marshall's and never wear them because they aren't what I REALLY wanted.

I'm down to one pair of jeans and now that I am just about back to pre-pregnancy weight I'd like to find a nice pair that I feel great in. The ones I am wearing now are hand-me-downs and not flattering at all.

I need a nice everyday casual jacket that still helps me look put together. About three years ago I bought a peacoat but the sleeves are too short and they drive me crazy!

My main thing is trying to decide on a neutral... I don't know if I want brown or black flats, jacket, etc. I usually go for black but I don't know if it's what looks best on me.

What is your coloring and body type (for jeans)? You really need another (at least) pair!

I am pretty fair with freckles (sometimes ruddy skin tone) and blue/green eyes, light brown hair. I don't even know my body type.... hmmm... I'm 5' 7" and 155-ish pounds. Longer waist, shorter legs... and I feel like I still look kind of wide-hipped from having DS. The jeans I am wearing now sag around the hips though and give me a combo muffin top/plumber's crack, which is what I want to avoid (clearly :ROTFLMAO:). So I think I want medium rise. I LOVE my Kut from the Kloth denim bermuda shorts so I was thinking of trying on some of their jeans.

:rotflmao:

I like a mid-rise too--I have the muffin top and waist-gaping issue too. I like the Gap long and lean jeans--they're midrise. They are a bit fitted in the hip, so not sure if that would work for you. Size down, they really run big. I would suggest their curvy fit, but the waist is just too low. Others here have had good luck w/AT or ATL curvy fit jeans for hips/but small waist. I like Kut from the Kloth too, but have not been able to find non skinny leg jeans. Another brand w/good midrise is Jag (they also make Worn, which are similar). You can get them at Nordstrom rack for around $30 or less!

:bighand: I just found a pair of black tall boots from Steve Madden on clearance for $45! Orig. $200 and for sale on Amazon at $140. They had one or two pair left and only in my size (9). Then I went back on the site to double-check something and realized there was a code for an additional 20% off clearance that I had forgotten to use. Hopped on to live chat and they are refunding the difference! So I got an originally $200 pair of boots for $36!

They'd better fit. :rotflmao:

I have a really limited budget for fall clothes for me so I am trying to figure out where I'd be best off concentrating. I actually have a group on for custom jeans so once I figure out the trends, I will get those.

Otherwise, I am pondering a new purse (pretty much done with diaper bags), a new jacket or sweater, some new t-shirts or some other trendy tops, and new bras (not exactly subject to trends!). I probably won't be able to get all of that so I need to prioritize. I am guessing I will have to trade off jacket vs purse. And that if I get bras I will have to really economize on the other stuff as they are so expensive.

I wonder if it is worth it to go to the Nordstrom anniversary sale to look for bras. . . . Or any of the rest of my list.

Catherine, If you're trying to economize, I would seriously look at NR or Marshalls/TJ Max for your bras. I got sized at Nordstrom and found the exact same $45 Calvin Klein bra at both NR and TJ Max for $17. I stocked up. What type of purse are you looking for? Isn't it fun to be done w/the diaper bag?

I am a 32A and I hate underwire so I have never had much luck any discount places with bras. Guess my size is just too unusual?

I have no idea on the purse. I almost bought one last fall and then cheaped out because I found an old one in my closet and was still using my diaper bag a good bit too. I need it to be big enough for one diaper and a few wipes for the rare occasion I carry those. I also need it to be big enough for my iPad. Otherwise I don't carry a ton. And I wear mostly black as far as neutrals go. So maybe black or maybe grey? Not metallic for sure. I'd kind of like to get something nice enough that it would elevate my typical jeans and t-shirt wardrobe a bit.

I see. That is prob pretty speciality. I rarely see non-underwire bras. Warner's makes some, don't they?

Gray would be nice for a purse. It was really in last fall. Might be nice to break up the black. ITA that a purse w/some nice detailing and high quality can elevate a more casual outfit.

@ Hillview: wow what a nice loot! Make sure you keep the absolute killer pieces, those are some fab clothes :).
Summer is in full swing here in the Eastern Seabord, temps in the high 80's - all the way to high 90's since middle May, so a while now. Not buying anymore summer clothes, no EOS sales for me LOL because I'll be in Europe from the beginning of September and it'll be fall there then so I need to make sure my wardrobe is updated enough, I need comfy ballet flats (preferably leopard, any recommendations?) - I have black Aerosoles flats but they're DARN uncomfortable, there will be A LOT of walking.
I'll stock up on leggings and tunic style tops, need a pair of comfy skinny pants (not jeans) - maybe GAP? - need a coupon though....

Well, I got one sweater. It is a pretty blue, not quite the cobalt that seems to be a big fall color, but probably more flattering on me, a bit softer. It is a 3/4 sleeve cardigan. Can't find it online or I would link it.

They couldn't find any bras for me. There were just three 32As on the sale rack and all three were underwire. The ones they brought out for me when I asked were not on sale. I had dd with me and it was a madhouse so I didn't ask about the one that is online. Trying to decide if I should order a few and just plan on returning as necessary.

No luck with purses. I liked a couple but they were $300 to $400, so way over my budget. I did decide that I would like a gray one if I can find it.

I definitely tend towards simple. That bag has about as much detail as I like (pockets, noticeable hardware). I do like pockets on the outside for my cell and keys.

Um and some other things
The PJs are great so I kept them. The St. John suit was a size too large and I didn't like the print/fabric so back it went. The sleeveless turtleneck and St John black blazer was a size too large so I returned and ordered next size down.

So I am very embarrassed. :bag

What about you??

The Tahari suit was a size too large and did NOTHING for me so back it went. The Cowl Neck was cute but too big, I returned and they are sending next size down. The Bootie was cute and DH liked it -- for in the bedroom, so back it went (I had hoped it would be something I could pull off for work!). I also got a pair of black St. John pants from the sale -- and they are a size 6.
I also got this (my first DVF)

and this

Which they had at Nordstroms but it isn't online.
Both are AMAZING dresses!!

Cute sweater! What color did you get? Do you think it would be warm enough paired over a turtleneck for winter or it's definitely a fall item?

I got ultramarine, which is a pretty soft blue, IMO. It is fairly lightweight, I would wear a coat over it in winter (well, not SF winter, we don't have one, but thinking DC type winter).

Nice dresses! It seems like you must have lost another dress size since everything was too big--congrats on the 27 lb weight loss!

As for myself, I struck out online. I went crazy and bought a bunch of stuff online but all of it got returned. I ordered from Tea Collection Women's, Bloomingdales with the coupon code, Bluefly and some things from Nordstrom that weren't available in the store, and pretty much everything either didn't fit right or look good on me or somehow looked different than online (thinner texture, etc). The only stuff I've kept is what I went to Nordstrom and actually tried on, and even then a few of those items are going back. Lesson for me is I really need to go in and try stuff on. It's still a learning process for me--I haven't bought anything for myself in ages, so I feel good that I managed to get a few things at least.

I like the shade of gray, and the texture of the leather. The size also is nice (I like a med size bag). Are you looking for something more simple (wo/a lot of ornamentation). I've never seen a Fossil bag IRL, so I can't speak to quality/durability/softness.

You should go for the Fossil! It's really durable and looks a lot more expensive than it was. I have a Fossil bag as my everyday purse/briefcase and I get compliments on it all the time. It's the Executive North/South Tote in Cognac:

That is a beautiful bag! Thanks for the Fossil endorsement, very helpful. I decided to wait until August at least to buy a handbag--between the anniversary sale and back to school shopping I think July's cc bill will be quite high enough. ;)

NO kidding. Really never again. With the kids and DH online shopping seems fine but I have struck out again and again with Boden, Athleta, Nordies and Lulumon. I am done. In person only.

I think with the kids, it's easy to order because you know what size they need and even if it's too big you can just wait and have them wear it later. With women's clothes, the sizing is all over the place from brand to brand and plus our bodies change, either from having kids, or gaining or losing weight. Even though my weight is similar, my body is a totally different shape now post-kids. I thought I was saving time with shopping at home, but unless you are really familiar with a clothing line and how it fits, it is just more of a hassle and costs money to keep returning things. For the Nordie sale, I first shopped online and then printed out a list of things to try which worked well for me (as long as I could find them--I got a friendly salesperson to help me). When I just walk into a store with no plan, I get overwhelmed. Even with my list though, a lot of things I thought would look good on me didn't and vice versa. I would love to do the personal shopper thing at Nordstrom and have a "fashion expert" tell me what to buy! Maybe next time.

*Love* your purse/bag, Goldenpig. It does look really expensive/high quality.
