My DD has just figured out that fridge magnets are fun and I'd like to get her a set that she can safely play with rather than the ones that are currently on our fridge.

Do you guys have a set that you recommend for her young age? I know magnets are major choking hazards so I'm guessing there are some that are safer? We have an alphabet set from M&D but they are cardboard material and I know she'd chew on them and mess up the cardboard.

The LeapFrog Fridge Phonics set is great. The magnet is completely enclosed within the plastic piece so it can't be swallowed.

This is great (although we've lost LOTS of letters). The farm set is really fun too.

Leapfrop fridge magnets with the letters. It is the best. My DD is 19 months old and knows quite a few letters and sounds from that toy. SHe loves to sing along!.

i was gonna suggest this too. we don't have it (we have a stainless steel fridge, so no magnets for us) but i saw it at Target yesterday and i thought it looked pretty awesome! i like how it's enclosed so it does not pose a choking hazard.

The only problem with the Leapfrog ones is that a 16 month old is too young to use as intended and will invariably lose a couple pieces. Pieces that you'll wish you had a year or two later!

I like the M&D animals and dinosaurs http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Animal-Magnets-Box/dp/B000N178E2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311190898&sr=8-1 and the magnet fashion things like this http://www.amazon.com/Shure-976-Daisy-Girls-Dress-Up/dp/B0009I6S6S/ref=sr_1_7?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1311190994&sr=1-7. In both cases, there might be a few pieces you'll want to put away for being too small.

Thanks for all the recommendations everybody!! I'll check out the fridge phonics! Suppose it's never to soon to start learning the alphabet. :)

We have the M&D alphabet letters and they seem to be made out of cardboard. Do you know how well the animals would hold up to the occassional slobber? She would LOVE anything to do with animals, for sure.
