what is the most economical way to use Amex points to fly? I see that I can buy flights right on the site and use points to pay. Or I can transfer points to an airline freq flyer points. Or I can buy "travel certificates"

Has anyone else ever done the comparison as to which uses less points?

I am flying NYC to DFW, if that matters. two adults and two kids.

I don't know, but on American Airlines, if you have elite status, you get a better conversion rate on the miles when purchasing travel through one of their AA websites, but not on all their websites. You had to sign in with your frequent flyer number to verify your status. So, if you are a frequent flyer on an airline and especially if you have higher tier status there, try to ask someone if that works to advantage when using Amex points.

I don't have tier status on any airline.

I don't think so. We were looking into doing a hotel with points and it was something like 98,000 points for 3 or 4 nights.

For airfare, thats what it was. If the airfare was $700 and I transferred 50,000 points....it was $500 off.

10,000 points = $100
