We have hardwood floors and tile with area rugs. My vacuum stopped working today and I need a new one ASAP.
I don't have a tight budget, but I hate to overpay. I want an upright.
suggestions?

does anyone subscribe to consumer reports and will tell me what they recommend?

Dyson vacuums are the best and they are on sale at woot.

We are happy with our Miele canister.

I love my dyson. We have all hardwood floors and tile. Have had the vacuum for about 6 years and still going strong. This vacuum has lasted longer than any other cheaper vacuum we have had.

I'm really down on Dyson - a plastic piece on ours broke (to the tune of $150 repair) in a year. It did a good job while it worked, but I wouldn't buy another one.

We got a Kenmore Intuition because it was best rated by Consumer Reports for picking up pet hair. So far so good, although the downside is that it uses bags.

Miele Polaris w/ SBB300-3 Parquet Floor Brush + 3M HEPA filters is the hardwood floor bang-for-the-buck buy. Can be had for less than a DC28 Animal though in all honesty, no Dyson can touch an Miele as there is much more to the ability of a system to clean than raw suction power.
