Update: The guy called today and said he had cash. Turns out he's just a young college student, no scam after all. I'm shocked.

This guy from upstate NY is going to buy my BF's car, we're in CT. He's supposed to come tmrw night with cash and do the rest in a Cashiers check. He said that his bank, for security reasons won't allow him to take out more than $3,000 at a time. His plan is to take the title for the car but leave it here and send a car carrier next week to get it. It seems odd to me. What do you think?

Scam scam scam. Don't give the title without the cash in hand.

That's what I was thinking. What bank doesn't give you your money?

Agreed. Yes, some banks DO limit withdrawls to a certain amount - UNLESS YOU ORDER THE CASH IN ADVANCE. He just needs to let his bank know he needs more cash than that.

OR...the cashiers check needs to be from a bank that also has a branch where you are located. He and your BF can go in to the bank together that way to deposit it and your BF can verify it will clear with the bank.

Fake cashiers checks are one of the simplest and most common scams.

If he is not taking the car now, then ask to hold the title until the check clears.

This has scam written all over it I think. Don't give him the title until you have all cash or cashiers check has cleared. I agree with having BF go to the bank with the guy to verify there are funds. DH has sold cars a few times and always did this to be safe.

Also I'd suggest getting it transferred at a tags place. Guy I worked with sold his car and signed the title gave it to the guy who then flipped it to another guy for a lot more money without full disclosure of some issues it had. It was a mess and they came calling to the guy I work with.

Scam. Fake cashier's checks are very easy to make and are just about everywhere.

ITA: buyer and BF should go to bank together, and BF should inform bank she's nervous about the check and hold title until check clears.

Just a point from my bad experience: the bank may freeze her accounts if the check comes back fraudulent even if she's done all the above. This is not a pleasant experience. She should make sure to cover her bottom very well with bank.

YAY! That's great, I hope he enjoys the car. I think I wrote a check for my first car, it was $4000.

That's great!! He was probably new to car buying and didn't know how much like a scam he sounded!

Yeah, that's what I think. My BF ended up having to talk to his parents on the phone. Lol.
