If you could buy one new pair of shoes for work that would be the work horse of your wardrobe and would coordinate with much of your wardrobe and carry through various seasonal weather, what would they be?

It might depend on your work style, but for me I get 2.5 seasons from black booties (short ones I can wear with pants or dresses) or nude pumps. Not much else spans all seasons.

For me, business casual...slacks, the occasional skirt. My typical "go to" shoe is usually a black or dark brown leather with a slight heal. I do have a couple dressier flats, and a pair of mary janes.

I like the idea of an ankle boot...although I have thick calves...so I'd have to be careful...if I cover up my small ankles it might look awful.

Just curious what everyone's favorite go to shoe is.

Not sure what's your budget, but of the medium range shoes I've had good luck with Stuart Weitzman and Cole Haan brands. I can always find them on deep discount if I am patient, too. Also, when I lived in a climate that had hot summers and cold winters, I kept a pair of pumps in the office and changed into them from boots or sandals/open shoes upon arrival. I prefer a slightly higher heel but here are some suggestions for a medium heel:

Not sure if there is a medium heel version of these but they are very comfortable http://www.6pm.com/cole-haan-air-carma-open-toe-pump-black-patent-leather

I also love suede and patent together http://www.6pm.com/clarks-class-rose-black-suede?zlfid=a9

Here's a link (http://www.smartbargains.com/go.sb?pagename=prod&cm_mmc=Natural+Search-_-Natural+Search+Top+Level-_-SearchDex_39-_-NA&aid=259&catid=1601&program=12297&prodid=1311679203&deptid=1094&isrw=4) to Cole Haan Air Carma 55 Leather Pump. It's $136 less 10% if you sign up for e-mails, but I have previously seen them for less. Just checked, and DSW.com used to have them for $100 with free shipping for members of their reward program (which is free to sign up) so if you like these shoes it's worth shopping around for a bargain.

For me, simple comfortable black flats. If I had a good back, sexy, beautiful black pumps.

I think I already do that. I have basic loafers, a pair in black and a pair in brown, and they pretty much work with anything. Very simple, medium height, easy to walk in. I wear mostly pants, but certain styles will work with a skirt too. Easy to dress down with jeans. In SF I can wear them year round. Like these: http://www.zappos.com/franco-sarto-bocca-black-calf

But maybe I'm boring.

Lol, that's an easy question. Danskos or birkenstocks... but then I'm an RN, so I can get away wearing comfy shoes for work. :)

The "workhorse" of my work shoes is this one. I have them in black.

They work well with slacks or skirts, and are extremely comfortable. I have already gotten them re-soled once since I wear them so much.

Well, I'm a nurse so it would most likely be a pair of Danskos. Probably not what you are looking for though.

I do have a pair of Danskos. Love them and wear them a lot. I also find Clarks with a bit of a wedge are easy to wear with pants and skirts.
