I spent all of yesterday at a one-day Wrightslaw conference on "Special Education Law and Advocacy". It was an incredible session.

Pete Wright is an amazing speaker. Very knowledgable yet completely down to earth. He made the law clear and understandable as well as gave us valuable information and insight about eligibility, evaluations, IEPs, etc.

Each participant received these books as our course materials:
Special Education Law, 2nd Edition (http://www.wrightslaw.com/bks/selaw2/selaw2.htm)
From Emotions to Advocacy, 2nd Edition (http://www.wrightslaw.com/bks/feta2/feta2.htm)
All About IEPs (http://www.wrightslaw.com/bks/aaiep/index.htm)

During the course Pete taught us how to use these books. He was constantly telling us: highlight this line, write this note next to it. Cross reference page X here with page Y there. He had us take our notes in the books and does not provide handouts because "a year from now you won't find the handouts, but you'll know where your books are."

It was very intense and we all left in a state of information overload. At the same time it was extremely empowering and I feel like now I have the right tools and knowldge to advocate for my child in a more effective way.

If you have a child in special education or you work with kids in special education, I highly recommend you attend this conference if you ever have the opportunity.

If anybody lives in Oregon, I recommend you google "Partners in Policymaking." It's this amazing program to empower both parents kids with special needs, and adults who have disabilities - not only focusing on education laws exclusively, but that's a big part of it.
