DS is starting kindergarten and this is the requiremment for his uniform dress code.
He mostly wears sneakers from Kohls and wears Birkis. what is the best brand out there that is best for school use. I guess he will be playing with this shoes during recess time. He is in normal width. Thanks in advance for any input!

Can he tie laces? We recently got a pair or brown shoes for DS (he picked them) that should meet that description--practical but not sneakers. The toddler version (up to size 12? I think) had Velcro and the boys' sizes had laces. We got them at Kohl's, and I think they are a Kohl's brand (Sonoma, probably).

We have found similar shoes at Target in the past, but I haven't seen any recently.

Pedipeds are comfortable shoes. I think these are cute loafers: http://www.pediped.com/Products/Flex-br-Daniel---Dark-Brown__RS1200.aspx

The Keens pp mentioned. They work like sneakers but can be worn with dress pants and look fine. DS LOVES his Keens. He likes them better than is "regular" Nike sneakers.

We haven't ever had them but I know that the lands end mocs are favorites with uniforms.

DS1 couldn't even get his foot in these and I ordered two different sizes. They are a definite copy of the Jungle Mocs, which he has no problems wearing in his regular size. I was intrigued by the LE ones because of the price and how they are waterproof. Worth trying though, espec if you are near a Sears.

FYI, thank you OP. By searching for a link to the Keens, I was able to find the REI ones on sale. Those shoes never go on sale and we almost always pay full price for them, as they are excluded from many online retailers 20% off sales. So thank you! I just bought them for this year and and next year.

And I totally agree with what KD says - all three of my boys prefer these Keens to sneakers. We wear them a ton around here because they are waterproof and pretty good for walking on ice. DS1 even tried to wear them with shorts this past June. And this is never a shoe I can pass down, because they just get worn sooo much.

We've gotten these for a few years as the alternate to sneakers (use as dress shoe)

Easy to put on and comfy. DS cannot get any of the mocs on his high instep so none of those works. I've also had similar styles from Geox and Ecco from Nordstrom Rack. Velcro is key for DS.
