View Full Version : Should I take DD to the orthopedist tomorrow?

DD got her thumb caught in the doorjam of a big glass door at karate today. There was no breakage of skin and no bleeding on the outside. However, the indent in her finger was deep. With ice the indent did go away, but her thumb swelled up pretty big. She can move it and says it doesn't hurt as much anymore. Do I need to take DD to the orthopedist to check for a fracture?

Rule of thumb (no pun intended) for going to ER is swelling to 2x the size, and/or numbness/tingling.

If, however, it's swollen at all tomorrow and she reports any pain when you gently feel the bone under where the indent was, I'd go get pictures. Or you could just assume the fracture and splint it yourself. :)

So sorry this happened! I know how much this hurts.

I broke my pinky in 4th grade. They splinted it when I went to the doctor and I got xrays. Two weeks later at church someone asked how my broken finger was, I told her I didn't have a broken finger. She then went to my mom and told her the xrays said my finger was fractured. So mom had to call back, and yes my finger was broke and I needed a different splint. It healed just fine even though I had the wrong splint on. My finger was crooked from the start, but you could just o to your pedi for the xrays if you're worried. If they come back with a fracture you could move on to the specialist.

I ended up taking DD to the ped this morning. They sent us to a walk in radiology clinic and gave us the names of 3 pediatric ortho's. Turns out there was no break, chip or even a hairline fracture thank goodness.
