She had a heart attack last night!!! My dad called me early this morning and told me. She had surgery and a stent put in and is doing well now. I'm headed down today to see her and she should be going home tomorrow. We're all very thankful it happened in the middle of the night while my dad was home (he's an MD) since there were none of the classic symptoms and she passed out after getting out of bed so wouldn't have been able to call on her own.

Not to hijack, but a PSA. Breast cancer gets a lot more attention than heart disease in women, but heart disease kills more women then all cancers combined. This from womenshealth.gov

Among all U.S. women who die each year, one in four dies of heart disease. In 2004, nearly 60 percent more women died of cardiovascular disease (both heart disease and stroke) than from all cancers combined.

So learn the risk factors and take care of yourselves! I lost my own mom to heart disease and I miss her every day.

The past 11 days have been unbelievably nerve-wracking!!! My mom is recovering very well from her heart attack, she had less than 2% damage to her heart which is wonderful and she came home early last week.

However while they were treating her, they found a mass on her lung. She had a bronchoscopy to get a sample to biopsy but the results were inconclusive. The first pulmonologist she saw thought it was inoperable due to size and position however she met with another one at the end of last week along with a thoracic surgeon and they both feel that it is operable. The biggest problem is that she is on blood thinners because of her heart attack and stent so nothing can be done for another month when she has finally weaned of those. She did have a CAT scan of her brain while in the hospital which was clear and she is going in for her PET scan tomorrow. We have all been on pins and needles since this happened and we're hoping for the best possible outcome ~ that her PET scan is clear and they are able to remove all of the tumor. She will still most likely need to go through chemo but there is a wonderful oncology center close to them.

My dad is being so strong for my mom but I know he is devastated. It is so hard to see them together ~ he can't take his eyes off her or stop touching her.

Please send all the P&PT you can that her PET scan is clear tomorrow!!

I thought I had updated this but I've gotten a few pm's asking about my mom which made me realize I hadn't.

She had the PET scan 2 weeks ago and it didn't show any activity elsewhere in her body at this time. However they did realize that there was more vascular involvement than originally thought which may make removal more difficult/impossible and that it most likely is traveling elsewhere but no increased activity yet. She is going in for her biopsy next week and they have given the surgeon the ok to go ahead and remove it when he's in there if it's possible.

We're hanging in and just going day by day right now. We're ready to get the plan in place and do what needs to be done.

My dad is an incredible man, he is so strong yet so compassionate and loving. My parents have always been wonderful role models for my brothers and I for what a marriage should be. They had just celebrated their 40th anniversary 2 weeks before this all started. They have many plans for when my dad retires in a few years so hopefully they will continue to be able to share those.

I just talked to my dad. She made it through the surgery well but they weren't able to remove it. We have to wait for the path report to get the cell-type. The surgeon is hopeful that it will shrink with chemo and they'll be able to remove it and do the resection at then.
