I've only used my slow cooker a few times, so I'm quite the amateur.

I want to make a pot roast and the recipe says to brown the meat before putting in the slow cooker. Can I brown the meat in the evening (and put in the refrigerator) and then dump the meat and the rest of the ingredients in the slow cooker the next morning?

yes. I have done that. You're just searing it to lock in the juices. I don't think making the meat cold before cooking it would affect that. (Just thinking through it--this seems logical!)
