My sons need to take their AWANA book, Bible, and water bottle each week.

Taking a backpack seems like overkill--I've seen most kids take smaller bags (the type that you get for $1 at Michaels). We've used those same simple canvas bags and also have tried the cheap knapsack-type bags, but this past week DS didn't completely close his water bottle and it ended up leaking on his Bible and book.

So what do you use and does it keep the water bottle separated from the other contents?

I made dd a bag to hold her stuff. She doesn't take a water bottle tho. They get drinks from the fountain during games so I don't have her take water.

I would put the water bottle in a large Ziploc. I would also send a bottle like a Funtainer that is less prone to leaks. If neither of those worked, I'd send a backpack. I"d buy a separate backpack than used for school -- LE has some great deals right now.

DD has a medium sized cloth purse that she takes. I put her funtainer in a gallon sized ziplock bag to avoid leaks.
