How can Pumpkin Patch make money?

I kind of have to laugh. I have ordered from Pumpkin Patch a few times now when the free shipping super discounted sales have gone on. Today I got the $8 dress I ordered for DD, its soo cute, but they had to have lost money on it because it was sent from New Zealand Fed Ex. I'm not complaining but that can't be a business model that will last. I know. I only ordered a gift once last year but ordered two rompers for the babies over the weekend for cheap. I then went back and got a top for dd that was 5.99 before the discount!

I just bought both of those, plus a vest for DS1 for $38 shipped when they had that 40% off sale. CRAZY! They are very nice in person. I wish they had good coat deals for girls too.

I do know companies get huge, huge discounts on shipping with Fedex. My sister was able to use her work fedex account for personal use at her previous job (they got billed separately for it) and she could overnight a package with fedex for under $10 when it would normally be at least $30 to $40. She's also shipped stuff internationally and it was still very cheap (well, at least cheap for 2 to 3 day international shipping).
