DS has been having some weird skin issues and the ped said it might be eczema but he wasn't sure. The rashes are mostly at the elbow crevice on the top of his arm (one much larger than the other). They seem to wax and wane, but today he came home from daycare with a huge red patch that is raised and rough. We've been trying cortisone and it had been getting better, but it just seemed to get way worse today out of nowhere and I'm kind of nervous. Anyone BTDT? Is this eczema? A reaction to a food?

DS doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all, but of course I'm freaking out

Looks like DD's eczema.

I used to get eczema in that same spot when I was little. It does look like it to me. For what it's worth I grew out of eventually.

Elbows and knees are prime spots for eczema. It also can get much worse very quickly. We like CA Baby calendula cream.

Ah, it's unanimous! That's good. Is eczema just random? Does something cause it? I am totally new to this. If it flared up after using cortisone, should I be using something else?

We use Cetaphil on DD's eczema based on a recommendation from our pedi. The pedi says it can be from dry skin or can be indicative of a food allergy. Since it is popping up now, I would be inclined to assume that it is the change in weather but would discuss with the pedi at next appt

DS had excema as an infant. Once the rash cleared up, we used aquafor on him as lotion as a preventative measure and it worked well.

Hmmm, thanks ladies. Unfortunately we're already using Cetaphil and Aquaphor. Maybe breakouts are just going to happen regardless?

My MIL swears that CJ's BUTTer cleared her eczema up ......

And there's the Rx Elidel, but from my understanding, insurance companies just looooove to deny that one.....

My girls seem to have it worse in the summer (weird, I know) and it gets worse with either sunscreen or chlorinated water, I haven't figured out which. The weird thing is it will go away completely and then flare up pretty bad seemingly over night, so you really have to watch it. Sometimes the girls say that the calendula cream stings, but it does help.

Oooooh. So, DS no longer has excema flairs, but his skin is sensitive and we do use CJ's butter spritz as his after bath lotion now. And it works really well to keep his skin from getting dry and bumpy. I didn't know about it when he was an infant; I might have tried it re: excema. You can get samples from stores to try the actual tub version, reasonably priced. Many many online cloth diaper and natural baby item stores carry them.

I swear by CJ's too. It's like a miracle for DS's eczema and the one sole diaper rash episode he had.

I would track what he is eating and if he is exposed to anything (cat/dog/etc.) that might make it worse. We do hydrocortisone followed by aquaphor.

Elidel's got that lovely black box warning too (at least, it did as of a few years ago).

See #22. When I was working this was a big concern in the families of several children I was seeing. I don't know what the current thought is on the safety of Elidel but it got a black box warning a few years ago.

Elidel's website seems to refute a lot of this...perhaps different data have come out now. It isn't something I've followed through the years, but it looks like they still have a black box warning on it.

I would definitely try keeping a diary of the things he's eating and exposed to. DS2's is very clearly food related, and cutting out the offenders has worked like a charm. He still gets little patches now and then, but nowhere near what it used to be like.

I will say that both DS's and mine seems to be picking up a little with the seasonal changes, so that could definitely come into play.
