Shel Silverstein?

My girls are in kinder, but we love http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Are-Singing-Tonight/dp/068809645X
The author has several others, but they may skew younger than your ds. We also like his If Not for the Cat: http://www.amazon.com/Horn-Book-Fanfare-List-Awards/dp/0060596775/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317265784&sr=1-1
And hs Scranimals: http://www.amazon.com/Scranimals-Jack-Prelutsky/dp/0060753684/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317265895&sr=1-1
Again, the age might be young, but we like Douglas Florian also: http://www.amazon.com/insectlopedia-Douglas-Florian/dp/0152163352/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317265725&sr=1-3

I think Jane Yolen does poetry, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Those might be too young, but maybe if you play around on Amazon something else will pop up.

As a former third grade teacher the books and poets that first came to mind were:

* Love That Dog, By Sharon Creech -- a wonderful book written in poetry prose...about poetry! It includes a variety of poems by well known poets (William Carlos Williams' "Red Wheelbarrow," Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "The Pasture," William Blake's "Tiger," Valerie Worth's "dog," Arnold Adoff's "Street Music," S.C. Rigg's "The Apple). You will probably need to look at this one with your child at first and take some time to talk about the poems, but my 3rd graders loved this one.

* Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein both have funny, fun poetry collections

* Poetry Speaks to Children -- has a collection of well-known poems, some read by the authors, with pictures and a CD for listening
http://www.amazon.com/Poetry-Speaks-Children-Book-Read/dp/1402203292/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317269577&sr=1-2

It's been a few years...so I'll have to go back and look...but those should give you lots of options to start.

I'll second Jack Prelutsky--he is a great poet. Our all-time favorite is Pizza the Size of the Sun http://www.amazon.com/Pizza-Size-Sun-Jack-Prelutsky/dp/0688132359/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1317270698&sr=1-1

Shel Silverstein.

Also, the "You read to me, I read to you" series... I forget the author.

This is a very timely question! My daughter's 3rd grade teacher just told us she should be reading poetry this year, and I had no idea what books to look for, other than Shel Silverstein. Thanks for the ideas!

We have the Bill Martin Jr. Big Book of Poetry and love it. It's supposedly geared towards 4 - 8 year olds, but I personally think it's good for all elementary school kids.

Kalli Dakos--hilarious poems and kids love them because they are school-centered.

We like Calef Brown. We own Flamingos on the Roof, but he has several other collections.
