View Full Version : Where to buy long, full black skirt for 10yo DD?

DD recently joined an orchestra that requires the girls to wear "long, full black skirts" as concert attire. I'm not quite sure how long the skirt needs to be (waiting to hear back from another mom on that) but want to start looking around. Any suggestions on where to look? DD is 10 and wears a size 7 slim or 8 slim in jeans.

As a former orchestra student, this is more of a challenge because fewer skirts are long these days!

I'd see if the teacher has any recommendations (I'd probably do something mid calf in length and wear black tights so that everything is dark below the waist.

Here are some options:

You might look online at stores that carry uniforms- as these seem to have those options...GL!

I was also in orchestra, but we were lucky enough that our orchestra ended up providing long black skirts by high school. I would check out a uniform shop, and possibly even a thrift store, since long black skirts are kind of OOS, other than for orchestra, you might be able to find something there, or find something that could be altered. Good luck. It doesn't have to be really high quality fabric (ours were polyester, yuck), since nobody is going to get a really up close look at it.

Zag, thanks for the links. The belted one might be too short and DD said no to the belt. The LE one is a little pricey and DD said she'd rather skip pleats (she's a tomboy, so just a skirt is a big deal for her; the pleats and belt could put her over the edge, LOL). But the length of the LE one looks good, so I'll keep it in mind. I think you're right, places for kids' uniforms are a good place to look. Hopefully I'll get some more guidance from the teacher or one of the moms who has done this before.

HK, you're right ~ since DD has to wear the skirt only six times (three dress rehearsals and three performances) this year, I'm not going to worry too much about quality. She'll be seen from afar as you said. I like your thrift store idea!

If anyone else has seen anything out there or has other ideas, JLMK, and thanks!

Oh, just came across this one: http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/girls_716/bottoms/skirts_scooters/PRD~813931/IZ+Amy+Byer+Godet+Skirt.jsp

DD is giving it the thumbs up. It looks like it would be below her knee, which hopefully is long enough. Hm . . .

You might want to try online retailers that specialize in modest clothes.

Ooh, thanks for these links! All three look great. Have either of you ordered from these sites?

I like their skirts. I order from them all the time for my older two.

Thanks for the suggestion! They have a ton of options. Just need to show them to DD to have her pick what she likes. No info about the fabric and care that I can find on the site, so I guess I'll call them.

I wash my girls' skirts on quick wash in cold water. Then I hang to dry, but sometimes I'll throw them in the dryer for 10 minutes first. You can use a warm iron too.
