View Full Version : What do you do with your used drop side crib? Donate or trash?

We moved DD3 in to a bed and now have a used crib to get rid of. If the crib was bolted in a way that the drop side didn't even get used, could we donate or should we trash all together? It seems so sad to put the whole thing out with the trash! :( But I understand the liability of it all.

TIA!

You are not allowed to donate a drop side crib at all. At least in my area, that's how it is. I had to trash mine. :(

Mine converted to a toddler bed so I trashed the infant rail and gave it away as a toddler bed.

I kept mine. It was over $700 and handmade from a furniture company in Oregon out of natural maple. I think it could easily be made into a non-dropside crib. I wouldnt have an issue using it again for myself if I ever had another baby. I kept it for the grandkids someday.

I made a garden trellis. If anyone lives in the Tulsa area and needs to get rid of one, I need more! :hysterical:

Mine is 61 years old :bag ( yea you read that right, but somehow it made all of the current standards, and it has metal harsware), and I plan to use it as an easel. It's on it's 7th child, and it's never malfunctioned. I don't have the heart to trash it.

i might turn mine into a drying rack in the laundry room. i read about attaching it to the wall with hinges on one side and swinging in out when in use, but just saw this cooler idea...

I thought it was okay to use a drop-side crib as long as it was not one the cribs on the "recall" list? Is this not the case?

The sale of all dropside cribs has been banned in the United States. Whether or not it is safe to continue to use the ones already in existence has been hotly debated in these forums. Personally, I was not willing to continue to use our dropside crib even though it had not been recalled. I also was not willing to pass it along because of my concerns about safety.

I know this is an old thread, but I have been wondering what to do with the crib that we just took down and I LOVE this desk idea! My DH is going to roll his eyes, but this is so cool and looks easy! I love the built in, "walls" of the desk!

Love this! We don't have a dropside but this almost makes me want one so we can make it into a desk like this!

Our expensive and gorgeous buttercream Ragazzi went to the dump, we took it there to make sure no one snagged it out of the trash. Baby #3 has a new "straight up crib" made in the USA and sold by LON. I don't get the saving it for the grandchildren thing. If and when there are grandchildren, I will defer to the latest, greatest, safest, modern baby equipment and assume my daughter or DIL will want to have something to say about it. I am not sentimental about cribs, they are things that served a purpose, it was lovely, no one was hurt (thank goodness) and safer alternatives exist.

OMG, I think that's actually the same crib we have! Ours is in the basement awaiting...well, I'm not sure what exactly. LOVE all the repurposing ideas. So sorry I'm not close enough to provide Jo with another trellis :)

Our crib doesn't have drop sides, and I still can't get anyone to take it. It also can be a full-size headboard and footboard, but I can't give the darn thing away. What am I supposed to do with this thing? It's been sitting in our upstairs hallway, totally visible from the front door, for almost a year. :bag

I guess I should be glad that people aren't taking used cribs, even when they're free?? I'm surprised, though. I thought lisiting it "FREE" on Craigslist was a surefire way to get rid of it.

Does Goodwill not take cribs? Maybe free cycle?

I would trash it. I would upset me to think that another baby would have got hurt from a product I decided to donate. I would also probably destroy it so no one could use it (like a car seat that was in an accident) in case someone decided it was too nice of a product to throw away. Our garbage men go through and keep our "trash" when we put items out after a major house purge (which happens a lot now that we our trying to declutter).

I'm shocked! It would be grabbed up in our area. I would call your local women's shelter and ask them if they would like it and make sure you emphasize that it's NOT a drop down side rail. I can't imagine that there are not women in the shelter or those getting back on their feet who would not appreciate a very nice and safe crib for their child for FREE.

I totally want to do that! I bet my dad would love to do that project seeing it was his crib, my only issue with it is we don't have the space for that now, but what an amazing idea!

Way too cute, and I like the hanging rack idea as well. We slowly dismantled ours and put it out in recycle bin over several periods. DH kept the springs (I just found them in the garage) and we still have the metal bed frame since it won't fit in the recycle bin. I like the idea of using it in the garden but now it is simply a rectangle. I could string it and use for vining plants though. Thinking... thanks for the inspiration.

eta: We got the crib from my Aunt who used it for her 6 grandkids before DS so it definitely got used before being recycled.

I trashed our Pali drop side crib. I might have converted it to a toddler bed if we didn't move across the country.
