DH and I will be in Detroit Thurs and Fri this week without the kids. We're staying at the Greektown Casino Hotel. We are in town for a wedding and our evenings are booked but will have both days pretty free- any suggestions for a fun place to have lunch in that area or anything else to do? Neither of us have been there before. Thanks!

The DIA (art institute) is nice and we've enjoyed eating in their indoor courtyard for atmosphere though it isn't spectacular food. They do have some art worth seeing, IMO.

I attended a wedding with excellent food at The Whitney and have heard good things about their tea and brunch service.

If you'll have a car, we also like to eat (much more casual than The Whitney) at the Henry Ford Mansion in Dearborn, MI. The pool was converted to a restaurant and you can (freely) wander the grounds to see the man-made waterfall/cascade or take a short but lovely hike around the UM-Dearborn nature preserve that joins the estate.

We love eating in Greektown and usually try a different restaurant every time, so I can't give a specific reccomendation but we've never been disappointed.

We've never visited, but if music is your thing then perhaps the Motown Museum?

Detroit is known for its Coneys. Chili dogs. They are good! My DH likes Lafayette Coney Island in Downtown, the rival place is American Coney Island. They are both pretty bare bones, but yum!

People rave about a restaurant called Fishbones (or something). Blech. It was horrible.

The Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are a good day trip if you like history. You can also go to the original Motown building, but that's tiny and won't kill a day if you do the tour. Oh, the Detroit Institute of Art is supposed to be great, but I've never been.

Will you have a car? If so I would go to Ann Arbor and have lunch at Zingerman's. YUM!!!

My husband works downtown and LOVES PizzaPapolis which is right across the street from Greektown. Great pizza!
