View Full Version : Help me find two dresses for DD to wear at a wedding (in India)

We will be attending a wedding in India this December. There are four events. DD, who will be 20 months, will wear Indian outfits for all of them. However, for the two dinners (with dancing; will go very late into the night), I want to have her change into dresses.

She has adorable golden shoes from Pediped, so I need something that will coordinate well with them. I would prefer softer colors - (light) pink, cream, purple, etc. - no red, black or white. Has anyone seen anything that may work? I would like to spend no more than $30 on each dress...

TIA!

Check out Tea Collection. They had some nice dresses on sale last week with soft colors.

You know, I usually love Tea clothes but am afraid that they just aren't dressy enough for this - I definitely need 'party/special occasion' dresses.

Oh, got it. I'll be on the lookout. Would silver work? I seem to remember seeing silvery somewhere recently.

How about some cute lehenga-cholis or baby saris that you can buy when you get there? Eta: just re-read your post and see you are already doing this!

Gap has some very pretty and dressy dresses - on my phone so cant link but check out their website (and J&J). Oh, and H&M has some well priced party dresses as well.

Janie and jack has a very pretty purple a-line dress on sale. It has small flowers at the neckline. I can't link right now but it is in one of the sale collections.

No, silver won't work - I am very particular about not mixing silver with gold and her shoes and earrings will be gold.

Beautiful! You have excellent taste!

What about looking at a thrift or Goodwill store? I am sure there would be a dress there that was probably worn only once (especially with so many little girls being flower girls for weddings at that age).

It sounds like you're looking for spring colors in fall/winter here. Have you thought of looking for 'flower girl' dresses?

Of all the ones posted, I like this one the best but I think it's over-priced. I'm not crazy about those two red Gap dresses, and I think all the black and animal print in the other dresses won't work for an Indian wedding. (The polka dotted pink one is cute though!)

I'm loving the party dresses at H&M for insanely low prices! Great for a one-use purpose like a wedding. And they have additional styles in-store since they do not sell online and have just a small selection to view online:
cerise:

Again, sticking with economical dresses, try Target:

Oops, missed that her shoes are gold. I don't like mixing the two either.

Amazon might be a place to try. You can search for a particular color.

ETA: Skip Amazon, I just looked, and their party dresses seem to be not so cute.

That would look really pretty, especially with gold shoes. Another one I liked was the one citymama picked out from H&M in the lighter pink color.

I also love cream/champagne colored dresses with gold shoes as well, DD1 wore that kind of a combo to a wedding she was in when she was two and it was really pretty together.

I love the pink dress you posted, but with gold shoes, would personally prefer a bolder color. (I also like the simpler red dress you posted.)

I wanted to second that consignment, or ebay, might be a great place to shop. HA typically has several short sleeve party dresses in their holiday line - here's
one past year's offering in size 80 (and cotton sateen :)) that I might consider (there were several other listings too, mostly NWT and less than $20):

Thanks, everyone! You've given my some great leads.

I will try to go to an H&M store today to check out the clothes in person (I haven't really shopped there much). I love the look of the dresses citymama linked (and even see stuff that might work for DS).

(On second though) I agree that the red Gap dresses I linked aren't ideal ... I still like the pink lace one but take mommytoC's point about something brighter. I'll sleep on that one since the 40% off works through tomorrow.

The Rare Editions dress at Macy's that mskitty linked could definitely work (as could a couple others I saw on the Macy's site)...

I like this one the best so far. I think it would look lovely with gold shoes. Of the other two redder Gap dresses, I like the one without the all over rosettes better. I think that one is less overpowering, and the color seems a little softer.

TCP has 2 cute gold/champagne dresses, one of which I find reminiscent of the pink Gap lace dress you liked too. I love the Gap dress BTW, but it's a lot of money for a one time wear.
This is the one that reminds me of the Gap lace dress:

Boleros are typically NMS but if you wanted to add a splash of color you could add one of these http://www.childrensplace.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10001_-1_784278_283978_25851|132984_baby%20girl|sweaters_ babygirl

I liked that first one too but DH thought it wasn't 'bright enough'! In a sense I like it better than the Gap lace one because the belt and different bodice gives it some definition - I am worried that the Gap one will look too monotonous when worn. BTW, I agree that the Gap one is expensive - I would only get it with the current 40% off promotion (through tomorrow).

I bet it looks much better IRL than online, it says the bodice is a velvet type material. You should order it try it on her ;) just don't take the tags off, it says in the description, not returnable if tag is removed. First time I've ever seen that so it caught my eye. I may have a free shipping code somewhere, pm me if you want it.

You know! You were right! I went to the store for something else and they happened to have a return of the second dress you linked - it looked gorgeous! Unfortunately, it was the wrong size for us. Anyway, I am going to PM you for a FS code if you have one - I would love to order the dress. TIA.

I'm glad to hear it nice IRL! I buy online a lot and never really gave it a second thought, but for some reason this year things I've been "meh" about online have really been gorgeous when I've seen them in person. I've stayed away from TCP for about a year because I feel like their clothes have gotten cheaper in quality and skimpy (aka trashy) in girls styles. I have to say, I'm loving their winter line so far! Finally, classic age appropriate styles :) Please post pics when you get it!

I didn't read all the responses so please forgive me if this is a repost but check out old navy. I was there on Saturday and they had very cute red and gold dresses. I know this is for a wedding and not for the holidays but I think the gold would look cute. Also try consignment stores and places like ross and TJ Maxx. Also friends with daughters are always helpful for special occasion dresses too :) Hope you find what you are looking for.

All good suggestions - thanks. I ordered one of the gold dresses from children's place that I hope we love, so only need one more!

On Old Navy, there is a grey/silver tulle dress that I saw there that was gorgeous, in case anyone else is looking for a nice baby dress. Unfortunately, the silver tone won't work for us.

It will be cold in December in India - I hope you ake that into consideration. especially if the reception is outdoors. Also, you might want to check out a couple of brands in India - Lilliput and Shopper's Stop. I get the sense that you are looking for dresses with a touch of Indianess to them - you will find tons in these stores. And the prices will be within your range. HTzh

Another store in India you might want to hit is called Westside. It's a department store, but the ones I've been to have a large children's section with lots of 'western' styles. I only have experience with being in the north in December, but it is quite cold and I can't imagine my kids wearing something sleeveless outside. My DD wore something like this, over her outfit, when we were there for a wedding last December:

Wedding will be in Mumbai - not cold at all in comparison with NJ. We go to Mumbai and Hyderabad almost every winter and love it because we get to wear shorts/short-sleeve T-shirts after the COLD here!

I was in India a couple of weeks ago (for work) and did take a look at some of the Indian stores, including Shopper's Stop and Westside - unfortunately, didn't find anything good.

I got the Children's Place dress linked earlier - it is gorgeous in person and looks great on DD. So, only need one more dress now!

BTW, this is likely the last family wedding we will be attending for many years (the last cousin we are close enough to make the special trip for) so I am super excited! There will be four events, so lots of 'dress up' opportunity:)
