Two twin extra-long mattresses as King

Has anybody ever pushed two twin extra-long mattresses together to make a King bed? Hubby and I both agree a King would be great but he balks at the idea of moving a king up and down the stairs. What do you do about the gap between the beds?

I did that for a long time. I had an egg crate type thing on it. I never noticed the gap.
