Amazon Prime Kindle Library Q

Does anyone know if you need to be a paid prime member to use the new kindle lending library through amazon, or will a free amazon student membership work?

I just reviewed the questions and it says that "paid student memberships" are eligible. What the heck are paid student memberships?

Our free student membership expired so we paid about half price (of regular fee) to continue the student membership.
