View Full Version : help coordinating furniture with a 'modern' style crib.

It seems it's time to add some furniture/storage to DS's room. I'm thinking a bookshelf and maybe a nightstand/small table for next too the rocking chair. But I'm having trouble figuring out what would look good with our crib, which is birch and pretty streamlined/modern looking:

http://www.giggle.com/giggle-Better-Basics-Harper-Crib/SUNCR,default,pd.html?dwvar_SUNCR_color=NB&start=1&cgid=nursery-decor-cribs-beds

I had no idea when I bought this crib how tough it would be to find other pieces of furniture to go with it. Everything that has a similar look seems to be sooooo expensive and not quite right. Our changing table (hi/low type) doesn't really go with the crib, but it looks ok and was a cheap craiglist find ;)

So I have a couple ideas in mind and I'd love some opinions or other suggestions.

A)I've been checking out this 'low rider' bookshelf (and matching nightstand) from LON for the last few months - waiting for a sale and also not sure if it will work in our nursery:

what I like most about it is that it's long (48") but also short enough (31") to fit under the window in DS room, the other 2 walls are taken up by the crib, change table, and rocking chair.) I haven't really seen any others that are that long and that short. We were thinking about getting it in the midnight blue. Do you think the dresser will coordinate with the crib in a sort of 'opposites attract' kind of way?

b) Costco has a bookshelf and nightstand that might work, but I've never bought furniture at Costco - any opinions? I would have to reorganize the room a bit, but that seems ok, we could eventually put a play table or something underneath the window.

Or have you seen something that's about the same price ($300 or so) that would work. I'm open to Ikea, but I didn't see anything online (I get overwelmed on their website....)

TIA!

I think these would look really cute:

I think the red or french blue would be great with your birch crib. You could get two - one 3-bin and one shelf. It looks like you can stack them on top of each other or put them next to each other.

You know what's funny, every time I'm on LON's website I look at those, I really like them as well. The problem is that 2 stacked won't fit under our window (I think I have to keep it under 32").

Anybody know anything about this?

How about the bookcases from the Ikea series, Expedit? My mind automatically went to these as I find them to be super modern.

or

Thanks spannaz,
I've seen the expedit mentioned so many times but I never understood why, it was great to see the examples. I also loved the blogs you linked too, a new place for inspiration.

I think for the time being we've decided to try out the furniture from Costco. S&H is included and if it doesn't work we can just return it - can't be that. Especially since we don't have an ikea close by.

We have the same crib, btw---it's in with an Ikea Expedit in birch, an Ikea Poang chair in beech (this is the closest match---we happened to already have it), an Ikea bench that I think is also beech (they don't make it anymore but it's from the Norden line), and an alder dresser with a natural finish. The dresser is the farthest off colorwise (also already had it) but the others are all close enough to work. Not exact, but all very affordable so it works out fine! I find the crib color is somewhere between the beech and birch Ikea products, so either can work. HTH!

We have the same crib, btw

Cool! I have to say, this crib was a totally splurge purchase, more $ than I wanted to pay and a bit tricky to match - I still love it ;) And thanks for the Ikea tips - since all our shopping is online, it's great to hear what actually matches.

update:
our furniture (bookshelf, nightstand) from costco arrived....and it matches perfectly! It looks beautiful and well made. The toy storage/below the window thing is coming separately.

FWIW, the costco site doesn't say this, but the furniture pieces are actually made by this company.

I suppose I could have figured that out myself if I googled the collection name.

My only complaint right now is a bit of offgassing, so I had to move it out of the nursery. I'm hoping that clears up asap, the finish is *supposed* to be nontoxic.
