DS is always looking up at the ceiling when I change his diaper and I'm thinking it would be fun to put something up there - a kite or fabric 'garland' (not sure what you call them, something like this:

Other ideas? Seen something cool online? I like the idea of it being sort of 3d - something strung from the ceiling, rather than afixed to the ceiling. Thanks!

I've seen people hang mobiles over the changing table like this (http://shop.walkerart.org/collections/mobiles/products/cheese-mice-mobile), but I think what you suggest sounds cheaper and just as eye-catching. How was Japan? (Sorry if you updated elsewhere!)
I stole some ideas from Etsy and made a mobile for dd's room. I used a branch and smoothed it some with sandpaper. Then I used a paper punch to punch butterflies from card stock and I put tiny holes in the butterflies and strung one clear bead on clear fishing line to tie the butterflies to the branch. I think it is a cool mobile.
(DS's nursery had a cloud painted ceiling and a big yellow lamp for the sun.)

It was great, I've been meaning to write an update, just have been swamped with work since I got back - thanks for the push, maybe today is the day

I'll try to find the link to it later today (i can't access the site from work). But Ohdeedoh had a fairly recent nursery tour for a girls room (has an urban city motif with buildings painted on the walls and a reading nook that's like "central park" with one of those giant Ikea leaves). Anways, she had 2 model airplanes hanging from the ceiling with a "banner" trailing behind each. She used the "banner" part to hold her daughter's hair clips. I thought this was such a cute idea for a boy or a girl.
I made 2 mobiles for DS' room. One was a copy of this one: http://www.amazon.com/Flensted-Mobiles-F030A-Shoal-Mobile/dp/B001FAZTCS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320953149&sr=8-1
And the other was a "finding nemo" ish theme. I used tissue paper to make 3D "coral" and then cut out some clown fish from construction paper.

what a cute nursery! And I love the airplanes!
I bought some super cute quilt fabric remnants today, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, but maybe if not a pendant/banner thing, then cut out shapes and make a mobile like the mobiles in the Walker shop - love the floating fish one, but not the $120 price tag!

I know! They are so expensive (but so cute!). I have one of the cheaper ones ($35?) I bought for decor before I had DS and love it. But I think you could totally make one on your own. I wish I were crafty. Maybe someone can suggest a page for making mobiles. The one I have from the Walker shop isn't made of expensive materials--it's just cardboard cut outs, fishing line, and bended wire.

I made my own. I bought heavier gauge floral wire from Michael's. I also used fishing line, some embroidery thread and some needle nose pliers to bend the ends of the floral wire. I made the fish mobile (the cardboard fish, not the wooden ones), for the fish I just bought cardstock from the scrapbooking store. The trick is to start from the bottom of the mobile and work your way up.

Thanks for the tips. I love the 'finding nemo' idea, one of the fabrics I purchase was a fish print. Now I'm thinking I could just glue the fabric to cardstock.
If I find any cool mobile tutorials I'll pass them along....

There was also a recent ohdeedoh post on how to make your own mobiles too. Here's the original post with some really helpful comments:

One of the comments linked to this: http://del4yo.squarespace.com/non-dairy-diary/2011/8/25/mobile-tutorial.html
There are also some mobiles that are made from embroidery hoops that seem less complicated to make.
Here's my small finding nemo mobile. I used tissue paper to make the "coral". I basically bought a small styrofoam ball and attached LOTS of tissue paper cut out into teardrop shapes to it. If I had to do it again, making a tissue pom pom would probably be easier.

Since this was above the changing station, I made a starfish to hang facing downwards:
