When do you start with your elf?

Our elf sets up the advent calendar the night of Nov. 30th, so the kids see him first on the morning of December 1st.

Another December 1 start. This year looks like it will be our last so we are going out with a bang! He will be creating a lot of mischief.

We are planning to start ours either Thanksgiving night or the next morning.

I was thinking Dec. 1 and now I'm worried about DS1. He seems too old to do this anymore.

How old will your kids be when you stop? Or, how do you keep it up with older kids?

What is the story with the Elf on a Shelf? I have seen the book/elf at target, but not sure what you do with it.

Can anyone explain?

We didn't get the book or the specific elf doll. I bought a random elf at the store when she wasn't with me, made a letter from Santa about how Elfie watches her and reports back to Santa, and he magically showed up one morning.

Our Elfie, like many, is quite "mischievous" ... He rides stuffed animals, takes baths in the sink, drinks fruit juice boxes...
