How long do you keep bank statements?

I'm purging our file cabinet and was wondering how long you should keep bank statements. I recycled credit card statements several weeks ago from 2003! Half the stores on the statement are not even around anymore. So what should I do with all my bank statements? Thanks!

According to this list (http://www.bankrate.com/finance/personal-finance/how-long-to-keep-financial-records.aspx)someone posted a while back, you only need to keep bank statements for a year unless they are related to tax, mortgage payments or business expenses, etc.

We recently cleaned out our filing cabinets as well. Our city has a mobile shredding service that charges $10 a (big) box. Easy peasy.
