I have some Philadelphia cream cheese that I'd like to use for an nonbake cheesecake. I found some in the fridge expired August 2011. Keep or toss?

I also have some expired November 5, 2011. That's a keeper, right?

I would keep the November dated one, and toss the other one. In my mind, 3 months is a long time for out-dated dairy products. Yum, I love cheesecake!!

Agreeing with everyone else, I'd use the Nov one, but I'd toss the Aug.

I'd eat them both.

I just used coffee creamer this AM that expired 2 months ago.

If I don't see mold and it smells good, I will eat it.

In my experience, cream cheese is quick to grow mold. I can't believe the earlier to expire one isn't green! If they both looked ok, I'd use them.

My general philosophy is: food that's gone bad shows clear signs of being bad. Our noses/eyes are well designed to let us know what's gone off. (Bacterial stuff like listeria, ecoli excepted obviously.) If it looks & smells ok, unless it's meat, I'll almost always eat it regardless of the dates & how long it's sat out.

If it's not opened, cream cheese can last a long time. Just look for mold.

:yeahthat: I've used cream cheese older than that with no ill effects. Remember these dairy products are super pasteurized and highly preserved.

I would toss both...but I am very paranoid about stuff like that.

I'd use the Nov package (if it seems ok) and toss Aug, especially if I were making the dessert to share with others. I wouldn't want to give the gift of food poisoning.

:yeahthat: There will be visual signs if something is off with cream cheese - mold or strange consistency then toss. Otherwise it is ok to use.

Yup, especially if you are making it for kid's/guest's consumption. Not worth the risk.

Wow, this round is pretty divided! Usually most people lean one way or the other :) Good luck, OP!
