View Full Version : What to do with a massive entertainment armoire?

DH and I just upgrade our tube tv to a flat screen plasma. Our tube TV is large and required a massive entertainment armoire to store it. This piece of furniture is 100% solid wood and so heavy we can't move it ourselves. We called a local furniture consignment store and they don't take entertainment centers because they are an outdated piece of furniture. So what the heck do I do with this thing? I'm not too keen on putting it on freecycle because this is so heavy and tall, I am afraid someone not experienced in moving furniture would get hurt trying to move it or would tear up the house trying to move it.

It's not modular furniture, so it can't be disassembled without ruining it.

Can you convert it into something that holds clothing? By adding shelves?

:yeahthat: or use a tension rod to hang clothes, blankets, play silks, etc. If you don't like the way it looks, paint it to match your decor. The possibilities are endless!

i don't know what yours looks like, but i've seen lots of tutorials online for converting them into play kitchens. here's one example:

:yeahthat: I was going to suggest the same thing. If you feel its too tall maybe DH can cut off the top or something and use the bottom half as a kitchen. You can see even more by doing a google image search (http://www.google.de/search?q=entertainment+center+kitchen&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=BCjdTs-MKYfEswbim92sBg&ved=0CGcQsAQ&biw=1127&bih=605).

We sold ours on craigslist for a few hundred. We included the tv. It was snatched up in minutes. We should have charged more. I just really wanted it out if the house.

We put ours in the garage for storage!

We kept ours and put our flatscreen TV in where the big tube TV went.....-it's easier because we don't have to worry about DD knocking the TV over. Plus we have stereo equipment (really old stuff that DH can't seem to update!) and DVD storage.....

We just brought our old one back inside for holding Kinect/xbox and our old tube TV ;)

It was previously repurposed as a craft cabinet in my all purpose room. I kept the kids' art supplies in it.

I consider them a versatile piece of furniture, but they are definitely a dime a dozen on craigslist, etc. right now. I see them usually sell for 50-100, sometimes listed as high as 300. Soooo many people are getting rid of them.

I think you might be able to find some way to repurpose it depending on your needs. (as a "pantry" in the garage or basement, for board games, for clothing, for toys/dressup, a pseudo "mud room" type of cabinet, etc.)

eta: in our last house I kept HSing materials sorted by subject in our entertainment armoire. I used dishpans and placed the dishpans on the armoire shelves (I had DH add a few if I remember correctly). You could probably use the dishpan idea or some container store containers to hold all kinds of things, assuming you have a place for the armoire in the first place.

This is very similar to what we have, it's just about half as wide, though, since it's not for a wide screen (otherwise we'd keep it).

We have that exact cabinet that we currently just store craft supplies in. It is even located in our dining room. I think you have found my husband's next project!!!

I was at someone's house yesterday where they put theirs in the foyer with family photos, mail, books, etc. It looked really nice there. I think they put a big mirror where the TV was supposed to go.

Craft storage. Add a french memo board inside one door and a chalkboard to the other. Some baskets, etc and then keep the big open flat space cleared for wrapping gifts, small crafts, etc.

We added a clothing rod and used it for clothing. It held Dh's work shirts and suit jackets.

When we decided to sell, it went quickly on CL. We specified they would need at least 2 people to help move and that Dh would help on our end. It worked out great.

Following this thread with great interest. Our flat panel is being delivered next week so out goes our old armoire. It's sold oak but not my taste in style (DH's parents gave it to us when they were downsizing) and it's soooooo heavy that neither DH nor I have any interest in moving it upstairs or down in the basement. We'll probably CL it.
