I know... it happens to everyone...
So now all my friends think I'm working for a Canadian penile implant company that also sells viagra, and that I would just LOVE to help each and every one of them out with an awesome discount. :ROTFLMAO:
But seriously, what steps should I take to ensure that this doesn't happen again? I already changed my email account password, but do I need to do something else?
And any ideas for the tech savvy as to how in the blazes this happened in the first place?
Sigh. I just hope the Canadian penis drug lord mafia doesn't come looking for me...

Aw, Bill.
So nice of you to ask on your friend's behalf!

 It happens to the best of us.

Actually, it made me laugh a few weeks ago. I got to tell one of my close (total computer geek, IT-guy) friends that he'd been hacked, and I wasn't interested in having a bigger penis in 3 easy pills. He was so ticked off, because he thought he was "above" that. :ROTFLMAO:

Other times, it sucks. A very close friend (actually ex-fiancee) had his Yahoo hacked... 5 months AFTER he died. I was getting random email and texts from his email account. (In that case, I sent his email address to the spam filter at Yahoo. It's not like he was going to email me from the great beyond!)

I'd make sure you have a good firewall/virus protection on your computer, and change email passwords, and other than that, I don't know how much you can really do about it. In the case of my IT-guy friend, once he changed his password, the spam from him went from daily to none in the past month since he changed it. If your FB was linked to your Yahoo, I would change your FB password too.

I feel your pain. This happened to me earlier this year, and I was so embarrassed. Viagra email went out to a gazillion emails, and not just people I knew well. It went out to anyone and everyone that had been emailed by me and to people who I didn't even know that were on the "cc's" of people I had emailed before. It even went out to our school district's superintendent. :bag I'm sure most people will know you were hacked, so don't lose sleep over it.

You already did the most important thing, which is change your email password. This incident also prompted me to evaluate my password and create a much more secure, cryptic one. Also, DH told me to always keep just the one, unique password for your email and make sure you don't use that same password for all your other accounts.

I think it has to do with Facebook. Is that the account you have set with Facebook?

It is... But they have separate passwords.

Also make sure to change your security question and answer!!

And don't click on any suspicious links you get in the email. Even if it's just to help out Bill with stuffing his stockings.

Mine too. But, everyone I know that had their Yahoo compromised were using that email address with their Facebook. It's my theory that there is a connection. :) I made sure and block apps completely since I don't trust them either. I am a FB conspiracy theorist.

I'd change email accounts and email everyone to tell them that you are no longer using that account. Then they can choose to block all emails from it. Changing your password may keep them out, but they already have your friends list and can keep annoying them.

Argh.
I changed my password twice yesterday, and it just happened again!
I just reset it for a third time.
I'm going to switch my FB account email and see if that helps.
GRRRR.
If it happens a third time, I'm disabling my yahoo account.
What a PITA.

Did you change it to something that is neither a word in the dictionary nor a string of numbers?

This happened to me about a year ago. I changed it to a non-dictionary word, non-string of numbers and it never happened again.

Liz, I'm sure everyone will know its not you sending out the penis emails. Now if they were VAGINA emails........:ROTFLMAO:

Did you try changing your security question and answer? :)
And also check your recovery email address you have on file.
