I know these are out there, I just can't find them - I need a washable, durable fleece sweater-y jacket that looks nice - sort of arty/modern instead of sporty. Something I could wear out to dinner at a decent restaurant, but still works ok for doing laundry and dishes.

I have one that I got at rei last year - it's cut a bit like an old-fashioned frock coat, I think, and looks great. I am just so tired of my mom uniform. Blah.

I bought two at TJ Maxx this fall. I love them!

Athleta has a fleece peacoat like jacket. Patagonia has the "better sweater" jacket. I own the Patagonia Re-Tool jacket and really like it but it isn't really dressy, just less sporty than most fleeces.

Not quite fleece but I think this looks cute (it's french terry):

There is a local small company near me, Red Rover Clothing, that makes funky and artsy jackets and clothing for women and kids made entirely out of genuine Polartec fleece with interesting appliques, trims, etc. They also do really fun hats, scarves and mittens. I've seen the products at many craft shows and artisan fairs and the work is very high quality. I can't recall prices, but I remember them as being reasonable for the quality of work and design. You can choose whatever colors/patterns you like and they ship to you. They also have their work at a number of shops around the country and exhibit at a number of craft shows, all listed on their website, so maybe there is one nearby.

I was going to recommend the better sweater from Patagonia. I wear it as a layer when it gets really cold here under a heavy jacket or alone in the fall/spring. It's pretty sporty though. Love the NF one that A recommended too. You might want to expand your search away from fleece and look into a quilted jacket. Boden has a cute one.
