I've been stalking them ever since blasted JCPenney cancelled my order during that pricing error/sale a few weeks back. I want to get them for DS2 for Christmas. The cheapest I saw them for other day was when amazon briefly had them at $43 and change. (They had been hovering between $50 and $60.) I should have pulled the trigger then, because that was the lowest I'd seen anywhere. But I was wondering whether they might go lower, as CCC showed they did go below $40 last December. So...still looking. Thanks!

Sams has a Melissa and Doug package of 40 standard blocks for $22. I do not see it online, but it is available at our store. I remember seeing other people mentioning it being available at their Sam's clubs, as well. Also, Amazon has a Melissa and Doug architectural block set for &39.99 (43% off) http://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Architectural-Unit-Block/dp/B000GFZMYS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_T1?ie=UTF8&coliid=I16GN5Y0WNV088&colid=1M2PPBR9O6RTT

(Sorry, I don't know how to properly do links!) HTH.

Thanks for the tip about Sam's. My parents are members. I could see if they could look for them for me. Are they similar in style to the 60 pc set sold everywhere? Larger size, smooth edges, natural color, etc.? I wonder if 40 pieces would be enough or if we'd need two sets.

They're exactly the same at the 60pc set. My mom bought the Sam's one for my daughter and I bought the 60pc. We're going to combine them, eventually.

I'd probably get two sets, but I used to build large cities with my brothers when we were little.

Very cool. Did you get a good look at them? Are they similar in style to the 60 pc sets?

These aren't the M&D blocks, but they are very similar (to my eye). If you can't find M&D, these might work?

These are small table blocks, not unit blocks.

This is absolutely ymmv, but I've seen them at Homegoods for either 35 or 40 for the 60 pc set. Our Homegoods is still stocked with all kinds of M&D toys for Christmas. Worth a look if you have one close.

Those do look like the M&D set. Pretty good deal. I assume you have to be a Costco member to order online from there, right? I am not.

ETA: Looks like these are sold out. Thanks anyway.

kohls.com has a bunch of melissa and doug toys. Also 30% codes floating around and Kohls cash being issued until december 24th.

Thanks. Yes, they carry the architectural set, but not the standard. I think the standard would be easier for my 3-year-old to use. I wish they carried it. That would be awesome to get the 30% + Kohl's cash.

I posted this on the Amazon deal thread but want to make sure OP see this deal:

Amazon has M&D Architectural Unit Block set for $31.99. That's a great price:

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I ended up getting two sets from Sam's Club. So 80 blocks for $44. Not sure if I should keep both or just give one and add on later with a different set.

Also got a Lincoln Log set from Sam's (originally $50 marked down to $30). Since I have Legos and blocks for the kids for Christmas, I think I will give that later. Seemed like a pretty good deal, though. I believe this is the set.

These are such a great price right now. Does anyone know if you could use these with the unit blocks to create structures? The pieces in the architectural set look so much smaller. Might be fun to have the variety, though. Hmmmm.

Yes they work with standard unit blocks.

Ok, so what would you all recommend: two 40 pc unit blocks or one 40 pc unit and one 44 pc architectural? Just when you thought you were done...

ETA: Ordered the architectural blocks before the price decides to go back up.

Well I'm probably not the one to ask since my block collection could make a kindergarden teacher cry.... but I say- the more the merrier!

Just wanted to report that my Sam's had the 40 piece sets marked down to $17.xx! They only had one set, or I would have bought more.

Thanks for posting this. I wonder if club prices are standard or vary and whether they would do a price adjustment.

I bought one of each set; figured there were more options that way. DH was thrilled - he loves to build. ;)

Do you mean the standard one from Sam's and the architectural one from amazon? That's what I ended up doing too. I think I'm going to take the second Sam's set back, although everyone always says more is better with blocks!

Just FYI. The architectural set had dropped down to $28 on Amazon but is now back up to $48.

I actually got both sets from Amazon, the 60-piece one when it was on sale right after Thanksgiving. But I do think more is generally better with blocks! We will probably set them up the night before and hope the cats don't knock them down and wake up the whole house. :ROTFLMAO:
