I need to get Christmas and birthday presents for my niece. Her birthday is right after Christmas, so I'd like to get something that she could use right away and something that would work better when she's closer to 18mo.

My spending limit for each gift is $50. Anyone have any ideas?

DD's long-ago toddler days are all a sleep-deprived blur now and I can't remember anything. sigh.

I was thinking some sort of Little People set. Would that be good or should I wait another year for that?

DS got the Little People farm for his first birthday and started playing with it right away - especially the parts that make noise.
In the $50 range for 6 months from now would be a wheely bug or other ride-on toy- a Step 2 push car would be in that range too.

My DC is about 12mo and just received a push walker as a present and loves it. How about something like this?

My DS2 loved this and played with the version he had (not this one) for along time BUT be forewarn the music on it can be annoying to those around after awhile but it is alot of fun for the LOs!

Hits at our house with my DD:

Playskook Busy Gears: http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-8479-Playskool-Busy-Gears/dp/B000BCEJ86

Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Kitchen (this gets played with everyday): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00388C3C4/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001115D5E&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=13KKGFE8VWMAHMF7Z8WY

Fisher Price Noah's Ark (Little People). We got this second hand. My DD is not into imaginary play yet but she loves to look at and carry around the animals and she likes the "dump and refill" nature of taking the animals and noah in and out of the ark. http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Little-People-Noahs-Ark/dp/B000F7M8IA/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324392553&sr=1-1

vtech 3-in-1 smart wheels (works as a rocker when the LO is smaller and a ride on toy when bigger. Also, the console can be removed from the toy and used on the floor.): http://www.amazon.com/VTech-80-070500-Tech-Smart-Wheels/dp/B000G6TUSG/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324392645&sr=1-1

She also likes to play with play food. We have this set from Learning Resources: http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Resources-Pretend-Healthy-Dinner/dp/B000MWX9MW/ref=sr_1_3?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324392712&sr=1-3

This ball track gets lots of play: http://www.amazon.com/Edushape-805801-Rollipop-Starter-Set/dp/B001H80E9G/ref=sr_1_18?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324392784&sr=1-18. The reviews complain that you can take it apart easily and this is true, but hasn't been a problem. It has not fallen apart while being used, but my DD will sometimes investigate it and take off (and I'll help her put back on) the other levels.

She is getting one of these for the holidays: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Little-People-Happy-Sounds/dp/B001W09LO8/ref=sr_1_2?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324392996&sr=1-2 OR http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-19180-My-Discovery-House/dp/B004MWJLHK/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324393028&sr=1-1

She also started investigating magnets and this is fun: http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-Fridge-Farm-Magnetic-Animal/dp/B0001X0DR6/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1324393077&sr=1-1

:yeahthat: My DD2 is also turning 1 right after Christmas and this is what I'm doing also. I just bought the FP Little People farm today and planning on getting a Little Tikes push truck before summer gets here. I figured with the Little People sets, we could add to them over time if she likes them.

Thanks, everyone! I purchased the Little People Farm for Christmas and I'll pick one of your other suggestions for her birthday.
