LOVE North & South. Wives & Daughters is another by the same author that I like, and Cranford is another good one!

Wasn't this a miniseries? In the 90s. I remember my sis was a huge fan.

Oh, I love North and South! I have recommended it here several times. Richard Armitage is so amazing in that role! I love lots of period pieces, but this one is in a league of its own. I also recommend The Forsyte Saga--it is a fantastic miniseries.

Thank you! It looks like it's one of the movies that streams free with Amazon Prime.

I remember all my friends watching the American version (?)
back when I was a freshman in high school. It was on TV in 1985.
I just remember that Patrick Swayze was in it. :)

Is this the same mini-series except there is the English version
and the American version?

No. Not the same story at all. :)

Nope, think Pride and Prejudice set in mid-1800's England. The title refers to the differences in culture between Northern and Southern England, kind of like the north and south of US.

Pride and Prejudice (with Colin Firth) is one of my all-time favorite romantic movies, and I have to tell you, I think this movie is a tie. And ohmygoodness, Richard Armitage is totally swoon worthy

oh yeah, there were definitely some moments I had to rewind and watch again :love5:

And FYI, someone on Amazon mentioned that perhaps the Netflix version is shorter/edited versus the DVD version. I got this version from the library and it was 4 episodes (roughly 4 hours).

Ummm... I watched this last night too!!! Small world! I saw the Hobbit trailer yesterday via FB and one of the dwarves is Richard Armitage, so curious how they did that casting. Anyhow, had never seen the entire N&S miniseries and watched it all via Netflix. He's amazing in it.

I watched the series a couple of weeks ago and immediately watched the series again. The "Look back at me" and the train scenes in the last episode are my faves.

I love the scene where he proposes after she was hit by the rock. In the book, it says his eyes were glistening when she rejects him. I have seen this miniseries many times, and now i want to watch it again!

The American North and South is nothing like this one. This one is about the culture clash of the industrial revolution in England. The American one is a little cheesy and is about the Civil War.

Yes, I'm bumping an old thread. I just finished North & South last week, and I have to say that it was FANTASTIC. I have watched the last episode over and over, just to have that ridiculously romantic feeling stay with me a bit longer. I have never considered myself a romance fan, but I think I have evolved into one. And, Mr. Thornton? SWOON.

Buccaneers was really good. It made me a James Frain fan (the actor--not the character he played).

If you guys want more of Mr. Bates you can see a much younger version of him on the, "The Glass Virgin" mini-series. It is free on netflix instant view and also a period piece.

Oh and it isn't a romance, but I am really enjoying this period piece series right now. It's called, "Bramwell" and it's about a female physician in the late 1800's. It's been very interesting and is pretty engaging. It's on netflix instant view.

Just wanted to bump up again to say thanks for all the recommendations in this thread. DH and I finished North & South last night and I have a bunch of the other recommendations in my instant queue now on Netflix and can't wait to get started!

DH really liked North & South- we'd watched Downton Abbey together too, which he calls "Downton Housewives" due to its soap-opera nature, and he liked N&S so much better due to its subtlety and clear literary origins. I liked it better too, though I did thoroughly enjoy Downton Abbey, despite its fluff!

I'm definitely watching that last scene again a number of times!! Wow.

Also, the Forsyte Saga was another fantastic mini-series. DH who made fun of me got sucked into that one VERY quickly!!!
I was not as fond of the ending in N & S but I read the book.
