Amazon often runs specials where they offer a few new releases at special prices. You have 30 days to watch the movies after you "rent" them. Right now, I have some credit for movies for choosing slower shipping speeds (it was a promotion Amazon was running during the holiday season) and I have rented several new releases for $.99 or $1.99.

Water for Elephants $.99
Tree of Life $.99
Cowboys and Aliens $1.99
Midnight in Paris $1.99
The Help $1.99

Oh, sorry, the price did increase on the last 3 movies. They seem to be running a lot of specials on movies lately, so you might check them daily to see what their current specials are.

Stupid question-how do you watch the movies? Does it have to be done on the computer/laptop?

No, you can watch it on compatible devices (TV, blu-ray, Roku, etc.) that have wi-fi. I watch Amazon VOD on my blu-ray player that came w/the app/widget (whatever it's called ;)). Here is a list of compatible devices: http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/devices

We can watch on our laptop or TiVo, but not on the iPad.

Not the ipad? Shoot. We all have idevices in our house, so incompatibility with apple is bad. :( I was just about to pay for prime so we could stream too.

I have no problem streaming with a mac. I do not have an ipad though.
