Teaching toddler about strangers

How did you start teaching your toddler about strangers? What did you tell them? Did you have any books to recommend?

So far, I've emphasized with DD that she should only go with (immediate) family members and she can always talk to one of us.

Protecting the Gift gets recommended here a lot, but I have never read it. I basically told DD1 that she is never to leave my side, DH's side, daycare provider, or a grandparents/aunt/uncle/cousin's side that she is with. I told her that it was not okay to go to or go with people she doesn't know ESP. if mom or dad isn't there. I told that is the one time she can scream at the top of her lungs and not get in trouble. DD1 couldn't talk well until she was just about 3 so I simply told her she needed to be able to yell mommy or daddy, and or no.
