I've spent the past 2 days putting in mosaic glass tiles in the art niches in my breakfast area. The niches are very large (70"H x 43"W). I had originally painted them yellow and had some black iron metal art pieces in there that were matching. It just wasn't doing it for me. So DH saw a commercial where they had a tiled art niche, and we knew instantly that's what we wanted to do to.
I LOVE how it turned out!! I still need curtains in that room on the window, and I know what I'm going to put in the niches now...I just have to find it. But I love how the tiles came out.
So here's the before (I sold the metal art work):

Not really. The thin set and the grout tended to fall, but it was landing on the ledge of the niche mostly...so I was able to just scrub it off. It made my arms tired, but cause i did 97% of all the tiling, and 100% of the grouting.

Oh wow! That looks fantastic! Can you come over and tile my kitchen back splash, lol? That is the same kind of tile I would like to get as the back splash, but I think that we need to re-varnish our cabinets before we do the back splash.

gorgeous! any tips for the home tiler? I am going to tile the backsplash behind our oven with traditional 4x4 tiles. I already have some of the tile, but don't know how to start.

I watch a lot of HGTV!! ;) And there are lots of YouTube videos on how to do tile backsplashes (from professionals).
Actually, it's quite simple...just time consuming. I got thin set mortar at Lowes (the premixed stuff), and the premixed grout. You need the tile, a notched trowel (the size of the notches depends on how big/heavy your tiles are - mine were tiny, so I used a 3/16's notched trowel), the float to apply the grout, and since you are using the tile as a backsplash, you will need to seat the tiles. I used these cutters (http://www.amazon.com/CVF-Supply-Glass-Cutter-Pliers/dp/B0007LI982/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_b)because I had very small tiles. Something like this (http://www.amazon.com/QEP-10267-12-Inch-Tile-Cutter/dp/B000FK5J5Q) would probably be better for a little larger tiles like yours.
Here are a couple that are pretty good at showing how to do it:

Thank you, lhafer! Haven't watched the videos yet, but I will. What do you mean to "seat the tile" because it's a backsplash?

Typo! I meant seal the tile. :) I am not sure what kind of tile you are using (ceramic, travertene, glass, porcelain, etc).
