View Full Version : No HB at 6 weeks (exactly), what do I do?

Hi everyone,

I just went in for my sonogram at six weeks (today would make it the exact day that starts my sixth week based on my cycles) and there was no heartbeat but there was a sac measuring correctly, the embryo and my hcg levels are going up not down. Doc wants to wait another week before discussing my options of termination. Do I have hope to see a heartbeat or am I kidding myself?

Any prayers or comments are greatly appreciated.

It has been a while since my early US/infertility days, but I thought average was something like 6w2d or something between 6 and 7 weeks? (eta: and that early on, one or two days off for dates or implantation can have an impact I think).

I had early USs with all of my pgcies for various reasons. With my DS1, I was with an RE and they did a really early US to check for number of sacs. They wouldn't do another until 7-8 weeks to check for a HB.

With DD, I had an early US. It was in an OB office and I was pretty sure I was 5w and a few days. They only saw an empty sac. OB thought based on my beta we should have seen more, but acknowledged their US machine was not as good as some for early USs. I have irreg. cycles, and by my calculations I was pretty sure I was only about 5 weeks though. They sent me to the university hospital for my next scan a week or two later, and there was a HB. The imagery was much, much different as compared to the in office US the OB had.

I would definitely not jump to anything this early, especially with everything else measuring okay  I will cross my fingers that things turn out okay :grouphug:

I think your doctor's advice to wait another week is reasonable- sometimes cycles aren't as exact as we think they are and a pregnancy isn't quite as far along as it's "supposed" to be. FWIW, I had an appt with my ob/gyn on Monday and I was technically 6 weeks and my ultrasound didn't indicate a heartbeat so I'm supposed to go in next Tuesday for a follow up. I tend to have slightly longer cycles so it makes sense to me that I wouldn't see a HB yet, but we're hoping and praying to see it next week.

Sending hugs and positive thoughts your way!

I am crossing everything and sending you good vibes. When I went in for my first US I was not as far along as they expected - empty sac. I understand how scary that can be. Then my progesterone was showing as low. I went on vacation for 17 days, took my medication and came back to a proper US with a HB.

Hang in there and I think it's not bad to give it a little more time.

I had an early US with my last pregnancy and they didn't see anything. I went back at 7 wks and everything was fine. They said i could have ovulated late or my dates could have been off. I know my dates weren't off though.

I think it's too soon to tell and I wouldn't give up hope. Sending positive thoughts your way.

Unfortunately, you just wait another week and see what you see then. It sucks I know :( Things could be fine, they really could. Or they might not be, but 6 weeks is very early and if you aren't sure of the exact day you ovulated it could be even earlier.

Thinking positive thoughts for you.

yeah what everyone else already said, 6 weeks is right around the time that the HB starts. You could be one day off and go back tomorrow and find a HB. It is typical for doctors to schedule another U/S for one week later. Either there will be growth and a HB or not. The waiting SUCKS! Hope you see a healthy HB in a week!

All the best. With my last pregnancy, they also did not see a heartbeat at around 6 weeks, but I can't remember exactly when. Sorry. While discouraged, my Doc/I did not give up hope and the following week, we saw the heartbeat. Like you, the hcg levels were going up.

I think I remember reading that time something about a tilted cervix (??) or something, that might cause the heartbeat to not be noticed as early as in other women? Sorry. I could be totally wrong about the actual cause, but there are some things out on the web about that.

All that being said, don't give up hope! My 20 month old is proof.

The OB ward at the hospital I am seen at has a strict 8 week rule b/c it is very common not to hear the heartbeat at 6 weeks and only sometimes at 7 weeks. Wait the week...wait another week if they'll let you if nothing is heard at 7 weeks.

Thoughts, prayers and positive mojo coming your way.

I have been there- 6w2d- only an empty sack and not HB- but a week and a few days later there WAS a HB and DD2 turned 2 yesterday!!! So sending prayers and positive thoughts this is the same case for you!! I am now 23 weeks pregnant with DD3 and I waited until almost 8 weeks to go for the first ultrasound to avoid the horrible weeks wait!!!

3 of mine had different due thats than what they should have according to my cycles. 12-14 days later. I would wait have another u/s in 7-10 days before making any decisions

With DD1 I had an early u/s at like 6wks and only an empty sac and I get ovulation pain and my cycles are spot on regular so I knew my dates. I waited 2 wks and everything was fine. I think 6wks is really early.
