I'm looking for some books to read that will give me more insight into that age group. Are there any "classics" that middle school teachers or therapists read or recommend?

I highly recommend The Second Family by Ron Taffel

2 great books for girls specifically are

How Girls Thrive: and Essential Guide for Educators (and parents)
by JoAnn Deak PhD
Girls Will Be Girls: Raising Confident and Courageous Daughters
by JoAnn Deak, with Teresa Barker

I see it's your DS who will be in middle school soon. I found Raising Cain my Michael Thompson a powerful book, even though I have only daughters.
